The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, better known as FINMA, announced earlier today that it has approved the country’s first retail Bitcoin ETF.
It explained that the decision reflects growing investor demand, although it also warned that the cryptocurrency remains a highly volatile and risky asset.
First Retail BTC ETF in Switzerland
The regulator had already greenlit a crypto fund for qualified investors five years ago, but the latest move is different, as the new ETF is designed for the retail market and invests directly in Bitcoin. The watchdog added that BTC’s comparatively long trading history and high trading volume justified granting an exception from the usual risk-diversification requirements that would otherwise apply to such a fund.
However, the announcement centered on investors’ conditions, as FINMA said supervised institutions that launch such financial vehicles must take measures to reduce operational and custody risk. At the same time, sellers must comply with the country’s Financial Services Act. That includes clear warnings about volatility, potential losses, and suitability checks for investors.
The move follows numerous other countries that have approved BTC ETFs. The US remains the undisputed leader in terms of demand, with over a dozen exchange-traded funds tracking the cryptocurrency’s performance. Within less than three years since their inception, the ETFs have attracted well over $57 billion in assets.
Risks Still Present
Despite the approval, the regulator explained that investors should not interpret the endorsement of BTC’s safety as a financial asset. It warned that investments in the cryptocurrency remain “highly risky,” even when accessed through a greenlit ETF. The watchdog noted that BTC’s volatility can lead to substantial losses and that investors should take this into account when deciding how much capital to allocate.
Nevertheless, the approval marks a notable milestone for one of Europe’s most established financial centers. Switzerland has long positioned itself as a crypto-friendly jurisdiction, but allowing a retail fund to hold bitcoin directly brings the asset another step closer to mainstream portfolio access.
