{"id":47784,"date":"2026-10-07T04:46:07","date_gmt":"2026-10-07T04:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=47784"},"modified":"2026-10-07T04:46:07","modified_gmt":"2026-10-07T04:46:07","slug":"indias-central-bank-hikes-rates-for-the-first-time-since-2023-as-inflation-risks-build","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=47784","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s central bank hikes rates for the first time since 2023 as inflation risks build"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday raised interest rates for the first time since 2023, joining several major central banks in tightening monetary policy to arrest accelerating inflation.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank increased the benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to a 1-year high of 5.50%, in line with expectations of economists polled by Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s economic growth has been strong despite global challenges, Sanjay Malhotra, RBI governor, said in his address on Wednesday, while adding that &#8220;inflation and its outlook are not benign, as they were last year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The monetary policy committee decided to change the policy stance &#8220;to calibrated tightening,&#8221; Malhotra said.<\/p>\n<p>The hike comes as retail inflation in India has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/14\/india-inflation-august-iran-war-energy-el-nino.html\">on the rise for 10 straight months<\/a>, touching 4.8% in August, higher than the RBI&#8217;s medium-term target of 4%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the current conditions, rate cuts are off the table in the near term, and policy action ahead can only be a rate hike or a pause,&#8221; Malhotra said. HSBC and Goldman Sachs expect the RBI to raise interest rates in December as well. <\/p>\n<p>The markets need to see a &#8220;credible&#8221; hike from India&#8217;s central bank that shows its ability to raise rates again to contain inflation, HSBC said in a report on Monday. If the RBI&#8217;s rate hike is &#8220;perceived as dovish at a time&#8221; when inflation is rising and likely to persist, it would hurt India&#8217;s appeal among global investors, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>India, which remains the world&#8217;s fastest-growing major economy, is among the countries most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/02\/india-impact-iran-middle-east-conflict-oil-prices-airlines.html\">vulnerable to the supply disruptions<\/a>\u00a0caused by the Iran war. The South Asian country meets<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/02\/india-impact-iran-middle-east-conflict-oil-prices-airlines.html\"> nearly 85% of its fuel needs<\/a> via imports,\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/11\/us-india-lng-lpg-supply.html\">the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>\u00a0being a key supply route before the war.<\/p>\n<p>India is also facing the risk of El Ni\u00f1o this year. As per the World Bank, India had <a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.worldbank.org\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/a3de4d6c-513c-462a-83a0-f8f946954a69\/content\" target=\"_blank\">its fourth-driest June-August<\/a> period since 1960, and it could lead to higher food prices. <\/p>\n<p>The World Bank expects <a href=\"https:\/\/documents1.worldbank.org\/curated\/en\/099937010062692091\/pdf\/IDU-f9019417-bd4e-421f-9957-2436b9aca942.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">India&#8217;s economic growth<\/a> to slow to 7.1% in the financial year ending March 2027 as compared to 7.8% in the previous year, it said in a report on Tuesday.
