{"id":47671,"date":"2026-10-02T15:09:50","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T15:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=47671"},"modified":"2026-10-02T15:09:50","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T15:09:50","slug":"the-products-barred-from-entry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=47671","title":{"rendered":"The products barred from entry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108359714\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>A truck crosses into the United States from Canada on the Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, on September 6, 2026. <\/p>\n<p>Jeff Kowalsky | Afp | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The White House banned imports of some Canadian vehicles, dairy and alcohol products on Tuesday, as officials sent mixed signals on the prospect of a trade deal.<\/p>\n<p>The long list of impacted goods includes motorcycles and mopeds with petrol engines larger than 800cc, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ANNEX-I-DAIRY.pdf?\" target=\"_blank\">whey products and molasses<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ANNEX-I-ALCOHOL.pdf?\" target=\"_blank\">slew of alcoholic beverages<\/a> \u2014 mainly those packaged for direct consumption \u2014 from beer and cider to wine, whiskey and vodka. <\/p>\n<p>The products are estimated to total around $19.9 billion of Canadian imports by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanactionforum.org\/shipment\/eh-scalating-the-u-s-canada-trade-war\/?\" target=\"_blank\">the American Action Forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The import ban, announced earlier this month by the Trump administration, is the latest step in a war of words \u2014 and tit-for-tat tariffs \u2014 between the U.S. and Canada. <\/p>\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> said on Monday he expected a &#8220;fair deal&#8221; with Canada within the coming weeks, but continued to strike a combative tone. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They take advantage of us, they feel entitled &#8230; there&#8217;s nothing they have that we need,&#8221; Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think what&#8217;s going to happen is over the next three to four weeks they&#8217;re going to come to us and they&#8217;re going to say, &#8216;We&#8217;re going to get rid of all the tariffs.&#8217; We&#8217;re going to win everything,&#8221; Trump said. <\/p>\n<p>However, officials suggest little progress toward a deal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108360959\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108360959\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000424218\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told CNBC on Friday that there was &#8220;no urgency on our side&#8221; to strike an agreement and noted that the U.S. still had &#8220;a lot of other trade&#8221; with Canada. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re still getting what we need from them in terms of oil, gas, potash, all of these things &#8230; so there&#8217;s still a lot of strong trade between the two countries,&#8221; Greer said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"were-not-waiting-by-the-phone\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>&#8216;We&#8217;re not waiting by the phone&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc told a news conference on Friday that the U.S. was &#8220;imposing illegal and unjustified tariffs on sectors of our economy that are causing considerable hardship to businesses and workers across the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>LeBlanc said that the countries were &#8220;talking about trying to find alternatives to the current circumstances&#8221; but that they were &#8220;not going to sign a deal that&#8217;s bad for Canada.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have said we will sign an agreement when we think there is one that is in the interests of Canada&#8217;s sovereignty and Canada&#8217;s economy &#8230; but we&#8217;re not waiting by the phone,&#8221; LeBlanc said.<\/p>\n<p>Ottawa has stopped short of unveiling fresh retaliation since its counter-tariffs took effect Sept. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has meanwhile spent the month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/17\/carney-canada-eu-associate-member.html\">courting closer ties with the European Union<\/a> as relations with the U.S. fray, suggesting in a recent speech that the White House is &#8220;weaponizing&#8221; economic policy as a form of &#8220;coercion&#8221; on other nations. <\/p>\n<p>Canada has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/08\/canada-retaliatory-tariffs.html\">imposed tariffs ranging from 15% to 50%<\/a> on 27.6\u00a0billion Canadian dollars ($19.45 billion) worth of a slew of U.S. goods, including steel, dairy, agricultural equipment, paper, household appliances, furniture, clothing and electronics. <\/p>\n<p>It said these were a &#8220;dollar for dollar&#8221; response to Washington&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/22\/us-canada-trade-talks-collapse-ushering-in-wave-of-new-tariffs.html\">50% tariffs <\/a>on goods including cement, wine, hockey sticks and more, imposed in August. <\/p>\n<p>The measures target a relatively small portion of the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/countries-regions\/americas\/canada\" target=\"_blank\">$715.5 billion<\/a> trade in goods between the countries, but continued escalation or a prolonged standoff are expected to significantly impact sectors such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/30\/us-canada-trade-war-tariffs-steel-aluminum-metals-economy.html\">metals and autos<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/24\/canada-us-trade-war-deal.html\">hurt small and medium-sized businesses<\/a> on both sides of the border. <\/p>\n<p>The Bank of Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/02\/bank-canada-rate-decision-trump-tariffs.html\">warned this month that<\/a> new tariffs had made the country&#8217;s growth prospects more uncertain and increased upside risks to inflation. <\/p>\n<p><em>Correction: Ottawa has stopped short of unveiling fresh retaliation since its counter-tariffs took effect Sept. 8.
