The sticker price alone is enough to question whether a college degree is worth it, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/analytics\/644939\/state-of-higher-education.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">recent studies show<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/15\/how-families-pay-for-college-as-tuition-costs-soar.html\">$100,000 a year<\/a>, it&#8217;s kind of like a luxury good,&#8221; said Adam Nguyen, founder of Ivy Link, a college admissions advising firm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But rising tuition costs are not the only issue. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/\">Artificial intelligence<\/a> is also rapidly disrupting the job market, and some employers now say they are placing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/01\/17\/now-hiring-new-collar-workers-no-degree-necessary.html\">greater emphasis on skills and experience<\/a> than on degrees alone. For college-bound students, deciding whether and how to pursue higher education has become complicated.<\/p>\n<p>Many factors \u2014 including how much\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/12\/heres-how-tuition-free-college-aid-programs-can-backfire.html\">financial aid<\/a>\u00a0is offered and how much students have to pay out of pocket, as well as the choice of major, future earnings potential and how long it takes to graduate \u2014 help determine whether college pays off,\u00a0according to a 2025 study by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/libertystreeteconomics.newyorkfed.org\/2025\/04\/is-college-still-worth-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Reserve Bank of New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;We are noticing more and more families questioning the ROI of different universities,&#8221; said Jamie Beaton, co-founder and CEO of\u00a0Crimson\u00a0Education, a college consulting firm. &#8220;At the top of the market, schools like MIT, Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, the return is not at all in doubt,&#8221; Beaton said. &#8220;Just attending one of these top universities has a strong signaling factor to future employers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, a number of other colleges also continue to offer a worthwhile return, Nguyen said. &#8220;The top schools tend to have better ROI,&#8221; he said, followed by &#8220;the flagship state universities.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>According to a new report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.princetonreview.com\/college-rankings\/best-value-colleges\" target=\"_blank\">The Princeton Review<\/a> \u2014 which ranked colleges\u00a0by overall value, factoring in academics, affordability and career prospects for graduates \u2014 top contenders include Georgia Institute of Technology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Harvey Mudd College and University of Michigan. <\/p>\n<p>The education services company&#8217;s new 2027 report\u00a0is based on data from its surveys of administrators, students and alumni at more than 650 colleges in the 2025-26 school year. It factors in information on cost, financial aid, career services, student debt and graduation rates.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In our opinion, they are truly the most exceptional in the nation at delivering outstanding academics, affordable cost, and great career foundations,&#8221; said Rob Franek, editor-in-chief of The Princeton Review. These colleges &#8220;are ROI standouts in many ways \u2014 from their outstanding academics to amazing career services \u2014 but most of all for the generous financial aid they award to their students with need,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Among the top five private schools on The Princeton Review&#8217;s list, the average sticker price \u2014 including tuition and fees plus room and board \u2014 was $97,813 as of June 2026.
