In August, Johnson had estimated the COLA may be 3.4%.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said how\u00a0the projected COLA\u00a0might change\u00a0will depend on volatile oil prices. Oil prices have had a significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/11\/cpi-inflation-report-august-2026.html\">impact on inflation<\/a> since the war began.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The Senior Citizens League now projects a 3.5% Social Security COLA, down from the 3.6% increase it had projected last month. That latest estimate would increase average monthly benefit checks by $67.90, according to the nonpartisan senior group.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the AARP now forecasts a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/social-security\/cola-2027-increase-estimate\" target=\"_blank\">3.6% Social Security COLA<\/a> for 2027, which would increase the average retired worker&#8217;s benefit by $75 per month, the nonprofit representing Americans age 50 and over said on Friday. That is up from the 3.5% COLA the AARP had estimated in August.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>In the past decade, the Social Security COLA has ranged from 0% in 2016 to 8.7% in 2023, the highest increase in four decades,\u00a0due\u00a0to rising inflation. The COLA has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/news\/en\/press\/releases\/2025-10-24.html\" target=\"_blank\">averaged about 3.1%<\/a> over the past 10 years, the Social Security Administration said in October.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-expect-social-security-2027-cola-news\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>When to expect Social Security 2027 COLA news<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The official Social Security COLA for 2027 will include one more month of government inflation data. The Social Security Administration typically announces the following year&#8217;s change in October.<\/p>\n<p>The Social Security COLA is determined by the percentage increase in third-quarter inflation data from the prior year to the current year. <\/p>\n<p>The calculation is based on a subset of the consumer price index, known as the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W.
