Canadian tariffs on U.S. steel, aluminum and iron products doubled to 50%, while furniture and clothing were also hit with the highest rate.<\/p>\n<p>Canada called the move a &#8220;dollar for dollar&#8221; response to U.S. levies on its own goods, which have been targeted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/22\/us-canada-trade-talks-collapse-ushering-in-wave-of-new-tariffs.html\">Section 338 tariffs<\/a>. Its Department of Finance said it would protect Canadian workers, producers and manufacturers by allowing them to better compete with U.S. products sold in the domestic market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ArticleBody-cnbcNewsStory\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/30\/us-canada-trade-war-tariffs-steel-aluminum-metals-economy.html\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleBody-cnbcNewsStoryHeader\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/30\/us-canada-trade-war-tariffs-steel-aluminum-metals-economy.html\">What new tariff walls in U.S.-Canada trade war mean for the economy&#8217;s critical metals<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Existing Canadian counter-tariffs against the U.S., including 25% on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/24\/trump-canada-auto-tariffs-trade-war.html\">politically sensitive autos sector<\/a>, remain in place.<\/p>\n<p>Trade talks between the longstanding allies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/24\/canada-us-trade-war-deal.html\">fell apart at the end of August<\/a>, with officials on each side blaming one another for the failure to reach a deal and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/03\/carney-lutnick-trump-trade-canada.html\">publicly disagreeing over which areas they could not find compromise<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/07\/trump-bombardier-cant-sell-in-us-unless-canada-aerospace-giant-builds-there.html\">on Monday<\/a> called for a boycott of Canadian airplane manufacturer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BBDC-FF\/\">Bombardier<\/a>, posting on Truth Social: &#8220;NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES!&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. exported $333.6 billion worth of goods to Canada, and imported $381.9 billion from its northern neighbor.
