{"id":46803,"date":"2026-09-03T14:04:30","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T14:04:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=46803"},"modified":"2026-09-03T14:04:30","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T14:04:30","slug":"average-401k-ira-balances-hit-record-highs-fidelity-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=46803","title":{"rendered":"Average 401(k), IRA balances hit record highs, Fidelity says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108326633\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108326633\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000416932\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/retirement\/\">Retirement\u00a0account<\/a>\u00a0balances hit record highs in the second quarter, recovering from a dip at the beginning of the year,\u00a0according to <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fidelity.com\/data-and-insights\/q2-2026-retirement-analysis\" target=\"_blank\">data<\/a> published Thursday by Fidelity Investments, the nation&#8217;s largest provider of 401(k) savings plans. <\/p>\n<p>But there were signs that workers also used their accounts as a piggy bank to ease financial pressures amid a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/26\/election-republicans-dismissing-affordability.html\">broader affordability crunch<\/a>, experts said. <\/p>\n<p>The average\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/401k\/\">401(k)<\/a>\u00a0balance rose 13.1% year-over-year\u00a0to $155,800, an all-time high,\u00a0according to Fidelity data. <\/p>\n<p>The average\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/ira\/\">individual retirement account<\/a>\u00a0balance also gained 10% from a year ago\u00a0to a record $144,523 in the second quarter, Fidelity found. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Rising balances were buoyed by recent market gains, which followed a selloff earlier in the year sparked by the Iran war. <\/p>\n<p>As of Wednesday&#8217;s market close, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.DJI\/\">Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a>\u00a0stock index was up roughly 10% year to date, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.IXIC\/\">Nasdaq Composite<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.SPX\/\">S&amp;P 500<\/a> have each risen more than 12%. <\/p>\n<p>Positive savings behaviors helped, as well. The average 401(k) contribution rate, including employer and employee contributions, held steady at 14.4%, Fidelity found, just shy of Fidelity&#8217;s recommended 15% annual savings benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you combine positive market performance with steady and consistent savings rates, that&#8217;s when you see these positive gains,&#8221; said Mike Shamrell, Fidelity&#8217;s vice president of thought leadership.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"savers-took-more-401k-loans-hardship-withdrawals\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Savers took more 401(k) loans, hardship withdrawals<\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108272046\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Lordhenrivoton | E+ | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Still, savers also tapped their accounts to free up cash, a sign of underlying financial stress, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>The share of workers with an outstanding loan in 2026 was 19.5%, up slightly from a year ago, according to Fidelity. About 2.8% of workers also took out a new loan from their 401(k) in the second quarter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Separately, the share of workers taking a hardship withdrawal also rose year-over-year to 3% from 2.6%, Fidelity found. <\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/retirement-plans\/hardships-early-withdrawals-and-loans\" target=\"_blank\">hardship withdrawal<\/a>\u00a0can be taken from a retirement plan without paying an early-withdrawal penalty as long as the investor has an &#8220;immediate and heavy financial need,&#8221; according to the IRS, such as avoiding foreclosure, eviction or unforeseen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/02\/long-term-care-medicare-medicaid-insurance.html\">health expenses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The uptick may be &#8220;a sign that household finances are becoming more strained,&#8221; said certified financial planner\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/cathy-curtis\/\">Cathy Curtis<\/a>, founder and CEO of Curtis Financial Planning in Oakland, California.<\/p>\n<p>Higher prices for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/12\/inflation-breakdown-for-july-2026-cpi-in-one-chart.html\">necessities<\/a> like groceries and gasoline have been a particular\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/05\/affordability-grocery-prices.html\">pain point<\/a>\u00a0for most U.S. households, against a backdrop of persisting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000793\">inflationary pressures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The No. 1 problem in the U.S. economy right now is inflation,&#8221; Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, said in an email.\u00a0&#8220;Meanwhile, the No. 2 problem in the economy is affordability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"financial-pressures-may-create-a-cash-crunch\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Financial pressures may create a &#8216;cash crunch&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;Everyday expenses, such as housing, utilities, groceries and transportation, have risen significantly over the last few years and if wages haven&#8217;t kept pace with someone&#8217;s cost of living, or if their lifestyle has become more expensive, they may find themselves in a cash crunch,&#8221; Curtis said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet, tapping a 401(k) should be a last resort,\u00a0said Curtis, a member of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/advisor-council\/\">CNBC Financial Advisor Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The biggest downside is that borrowing or withdrawing from a 401(k) disrupts long-term retirement savings,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n<p>So-called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/02\/10\/policy-changes-look-to-reduce-401k-plan-leakage.html\">leakage<\/a>&#8221; from 401(k) plans \u2014 especially cashing out an account before retirement age \u2014 jeopardizes the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/01\/emergency-funds-401k-savings.html\">power of compound interest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is also a &#8220;behavioral downside,&#8221;
