In fact, students and their parents spent closer to $35,000, on average, on college costs \u2014 including tuition, fees, books, room and board, technology and other expenses \u2014 during the 2025-26 academic year, according to Sallie Mae&#8217;s recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salliemae.com\/about\/leading-research\/how-america-pays-for-college\/\" target=\"_blank\">How America Pays for College<\/a> report.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, families tap savings and cobble together other resources to cover the tab, including scholarships, second jobs, and federal and private <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/student-loans\/\">student loans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Of all possible sources, &#8220;merit aid is an underutilized resource,&#8221; said Robert Franek, editor-in-chief at\u00a0The Princeton Review. Beyond federal assistance from the U.S. Department of Education and state aid, many schools are increasingly offering students more scholarship funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are grants, money that students don&#8217;t have to pay back,&#8221; Franek said. &#8220;That is significant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Between the 2014-15 and 2024-25 academic years,\u00a0institutional grant aid rose by 24% to $85.1 billion. During 2024-25, institutional money accounted for about half of all grant aid for undergraduate and graduate students, according to the latest data available from the College Board, which tracks\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/research.collegeboard.org\/trends\" target=\"_blank\">trends in college pricing and student aid<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/07\/fafsa-college-financial-aid-for-2026-27.html\">Financial aid<\/a> is increasingly influencing students&#8217; college decisions. Nearly nine in 10 students \u2014 89% \u2014 said they would have chosen a different college for more scholarship aid, according to a new report by education software company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellucian.com\/resources\/industry-reports\/student-voice-report?utm_source=press-release&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=20260817_na_int_wc_2026-student-voice-report&amp;utm_campaignid=701Nu00000kkaXSIAY\" target=\"_blank\">Ellucian<\/a>, based on a survey of more than 2,000 current and prospective college students in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>To that end,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.princetonreview.com\/college-rankings\/best-colleges\" target=\"_blank\">The Princeton Review\u00a0ranked colleges<\/a>\u00a0by how generous their financial aid awards are and how satisfied students are with their packages.\u00a0The 2027 edition of the company&#8217;s &#8220;Best Colleges&#8221; guide is based on data from surveys of 170,000 students during the 2025-26 academic year. Sticker prices are based on the upcoming school year, as of June.<\/p>\n<p>The colleges and universities that ranked highest on The Princeton Review&#8217;s\u00a0list successfully met students&#8217; growing need for assistance, Franek said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is money out there, great big buckets of money,&#8221; Franek said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Washington and Lee University<\/a>, for example, is the most expensive school on the list with an annual sticker price near six figures.
