Employers could also allow employees to fund their dependent children&#8217;s accounts with pre-tax dollars straight from their paychecks.<\/p>\n<p>Trump Accounts, also known as 530A accounts, &#8220;are giving American families a new way to build wealth from day one,&#8221; Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, Treasury is publishing guidance that will help families grow Trump Accounts by allowing employers to contribute up to $2,500 tax-free each year for employees&#8217; dependents and giving employees the option to contribute pre-tax dollars directly to those accounts,&#8221; Bessent said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The announcement follows the notice of proposed rulemaking on <a href=\"https:\/\/public-inspection.federalregister.gov\/2026-16314.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Monday<\/a> from Treasury and the IRS, detailing how employers can set up Trump Accounts. The proposal is subject to public comment and a hearing, set for October, before the agencies can finalize the rules.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"who-can-contribute-to-trump-accounts\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Who can contribute to Trump Accounts<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Trump Accounts are open to any U.S. child under 18 with a Social Security number.<\/p>\n<p>Children born from 2025 through 2028 can receive a one-time\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/27\/trump-accounts-seed-ok.html\">$1,000 deposit<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0Treasury Department as part of a pilot program designed to jump-start long-term savings.<\/p>\n<p>So far, about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/27\/bessent-trump-account-signups-reach-7-million.html\">7 million<\/a> children have been signed up, Bessent said in remarks during a July 27 meeting of the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/policy-issues\/consumer-policy\/financial-literacy-and-education-commission\" target=\"_blank\">Financial Literacy and Education Commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once an account is established, parents, guardians, grandparents, and others can contribute up to $5,000 per year until the year before the beneficiary turns 18. As part of the $5,000 limit, employers can contribute up to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/treasury-irs-issue-guidance-on-trump-accounts-established-under-the-working-families-tax-cuts-notice-announces-upcoming-regulations\" target=\"_blank\">$2,500 per worker<\/a>\u00a0per year. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>As of Tuesday, more than 50 companies have committed to Trump Account contributions for their employees, according to Treasury, with some offering to match the government&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/08\/how-trump-accounts-work.html\">$1,000<\/a> seed money.<\/p>\n<p>While there are still some unanswered questions, employers now have a much better understanding of the administrative and compliance framework, according to Melissa Elbert, a partner of wealth\u00a0solutions at Aon,\u00a0a retirement benefits consultant for employers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercer.com\/en-us\/insights\/us-health-news\/trump-accounts-early-employer-interest-remains-limited\/\" target=\"_blank\">A Mercer poll<\/a> of\u00a0nearly 350 U.S. employers in April found that only about 4% of companies expected to implement a Trump Account contribution program in 2026 or 2027 and that two-thirds had decided not to make contributions to these accounts.
