The new accounts are a chance to teach them how investing works. <\/p>\n<p>Bergman, the founder of IRA Financial, told CNBC he was eager to set up Trump Accounts for his sons to help them take advantage of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/03\/trump-accounts-can-help-build-wealth-especially-for-wealthier-families.html\">\u00a0tax-advantaged growth<\/a>\u00a0available with these savings and investment accounts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just the number of dollars you\u2019re going to have at the end of the day, but it\u2019s hopefully opening people\u2019s eyes to say, \u2018Hey, this is what savings is. This is how it works,'\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a very powerful tool.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"how-trump-accounts-work\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>How Trump Accounts work<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Bergman is one of millions of parents figuring out whether \u2014 and to what extent \u2014 Trump Accounts fit with their family\u2019s financial goals.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the official July 4 launch of Trump Accounts, families signed up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/23\/trump-account-signups-hit-6-million-millions-more-children-eligible.html\">more than 6 million children<\/a>, according to the Treasury Department. About 1.4 million of those registered are babies born between 2025 and 2028, who are eligible to receive the $1,000 seed investment from the federal government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Parents, grandparents, and loved ones can contribute up to $5,000 a year to what are also known as 530A accounts. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/02\/trump-accounts-boosted-by-growing-list-of-employer-matches.html\">Employers can also make contributions<\/a>\u00a0of up to $2,500 per worker per year, which are included in the $5,000 annual maximum contribution. <\/p>\n<p>Funds in these accounts are generally not accessible before age 18, and then the account converts to a traditional IRA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For more details, check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/01\/trump-accounts-launch-july-4.html\">guide to Trump Accounts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"if-its-free-money-well-take-it\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>\u2018If it\u2019s free money, we\u2019ll take it\u2019<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Will Matthews and his wife are expecting a baby who would be eligible for the free seed money. The couple also set up Trump Accounts for their two young children. He said they anticipate each could be eligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/02\/michael-susan-dell-trump-accounts.html\">a $250 charitable contribution from the Dell Foundation<\/a> offered to children 10 and under who live in a qualifying zip code.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s free money, we\u2019ll take it,\u201d said Matthews, who is self-employed and works as a senior auditor in Columbus, Ohio.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although he believes investing early helps to improve a child\u2019s financial education, Matthews said, he and his wife are unlikely to add more money to their children\u2019s Trump Accounts beyond those grants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese accounts don\u2019t have that many crazy tax advantages for me to be gung-ho on putting all my eggs in this basket,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Instead, he said, he is focusing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/19\/trump-accounts-529-plans.html\">funding 529 savings accounts first<\/a>\u00a0to help pay for their college education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Experts have said 529s, custodial brokerage accounts and Roth IRAs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/05\/trump-accounts-vs-529s-roth-iras.html\">can be worth considering<\/a> in addition to or instead of a Trump Account, depending on your family\u2019s goals and timeline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"making-tax-free-millionaires\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>Making \u2018tax-free millionaires\u2019<\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108331010\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>The Bergman family<\/p>\n<p>Courtesy: Bergman family<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Meanwhile, Bergman said he plans to make the maximum Trump Account contribution of $5,000 per year\u00a0for\u00a0his sons\u00a0before they turn 18. At that age, it becomes a traditional IRA for the owner to use as they see fit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it helps people want to invest,\u201d said Aven,15, who is Bergman\u2019s eldest son. \u201cIt also teaches you that you could see the growth\u201d in your portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>Bergman and his wife, Jaclyn, are already encouraging Aven and his brother Ever, 12, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/03\/trump-accounts-roth-ira.html\">convert their Trump Accounts to Roth IRAs<\/a>\u00a0down the line.
