{"id":45003,"date":"2026-06-26T12:36:41","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T12:36:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=45003"},"modified":"2026-06-26T12:36:41","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T12:36:41","slug":"imposter-scams-led-fraud-reports-to-ftc-in-2025-3-5-billion-losses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=45003","title":{"rendered":"Imposter scams led fraud reports to FTC in 2025, $3.5 billion losses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"SpecialReportArticle-ArticleBody-6\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"SpecialReportArticle-articleBody-6-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108325538\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Rainstar | E+ | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>For the fifth year in a row, imposter scams ranked as the <a href=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/app\/profile\/federal.trade.commission\/viz\/TheBigViewAllSentinelReports\/TopReports\" target=\"_blank\">most reported<\/a> type of fraud in 2025, according to the Federal Trade Commission&#8217;s latest data.<\/p>\n<p>While 80% of the roughly 1 million who filed an imposter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/09\/ai-powered-scam-calls-getting-more-convincing.html\">scam<\/a> report didn&#8217;t lose money, the other 20% lost a collective $3.5 billion, the FTC&#8217;s data shows.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/17\/fed-interest-rates-unchanged-june.html\">consumers<\/a> who are losing very high-dollar amounts,&#8221; said Patty Hsue, chief of staff for the FTC&#8217;s Division of Marketing Practices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"more-from-women-and-wealth\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">More from Women and Wealth:<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;The median loss [of $700] is on the lower side but there is a very small percentage of consumers who are losing high six figures and up,&#8221; Hsue said. &#8220;There are definitely some consumers who have lost over $1 million.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"losses-driven-by-scams-costing-100000-or-more\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Losses driven by scams costing $100,000 or more<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Total fraud losses reported to the FTC in 2025 reached about $15.9 billion \u2014 the highest on record and an increase of roughly 27% from $12.5 billion in 2024. Since 2020, reported losses have increased nearly 430%, according to the FTC.<\/p>\n<p>The trend is largely driven by a sharp increase in the number of consumers saying they were scammed out of at least $100,000, which occurs more often among victims age 60 or older, according to the FTC.<\/p>\n<p>Scams involving losses of $100,000 or more among that age group accounted for $1.6 billion, or 68%, of their total $2.4 billion in losses reported in 2024, according to the FTC&#8217;s 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/P144400-OlderAdultsReportDec2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">annual report to Congress<\/a>, released in December.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108275598\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108275598\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000406011\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;While we get tons and tons of imposter reports from people of all ages \u2026 older adults do tend to report more money losses than younger adults,&#8221; Hsue said.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, men and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/18\/retirement-savings-habits-of-women-vs-men-vanguard.html\">women<\/a> are equally victimized by scammers, said Amy Nofziger, senior director of victim support for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/about-fraud-watch-network\/\" target=\"_blank\">AARP Fraud Watch Network<\/a>, a free resource for consumers to learn about scams and report them. <\/p>\n<p>However, &#8220;most of the time we hear from women more because they are more likely to report their victimization,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, in many cases, a female family member is the person who reports the fraud on behalf of the male, Nofziger said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, artificial intelligence may also make it harder to spot scams.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We used to say to look for spelling errors or poor grammar,&#8221; Nofziger said. &#8220;Now, that&#8217;s gone out the window. With the tools available to criminals, they can make any text or email sound 100% correct.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"bank-impersonators-lead-losses-from-imposter-scams\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Bank impersonators lead losses from imposter scams<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>In the imposter scam category, business impersonators got away with $1 billion in 2025, with the highest reported losses attributed to criminals pretending to work for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/banks\/\">bank<\/a>, according to the FTC. Another $920 million stemmed from government impersonators. Those numbers are up from $866 million and $789 million, respectively, in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen a change in how imposter scams operate these days,&#8221; Hsue said. &#8220;Really it&#8217;s becoming much more sophisticated than it has been in the past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of the newer imposter scams is a hybrid of sorts, Hsue said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote data-test=\"Pullquote\">\n<div class=\"Pullquote-pullquote\" style=\"border-top-color:#0f8743\">\n<div>\n<p>The real risk with this &#8230; is that consumers really think they are moving their money to protect it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Pullquote-sourceWrapper\">\n<p>Patty Hsue<\/p>\n<p>Chief of staff for the FTC&#8217;s Division of Marketing Practices<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;It starts off as a business imposter scam, usually something along the lines of &#8216;your account has been compromised,'&#8221; Hsue said, explaining that it could look like a text, email or call from your bank, <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AMZN\/\">Amazon<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> or another well-known brand.<\/p>\n<p>When the victim responds, the criminal says they are transferring the person to a government agency like the FTC or FBI. &#8220;A fake government agent tells you that you need to move your money in order to protect your account,&#8221; Hsue said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The real risk with this &#8230; is that consumers really think they are moving their money to protect it,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Because the victim thinks they are protecting their entire account, &#8220;they really move all of their funds. You&#8217;re talking about bank accounts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/29\/roth-ira-owners-may-need-a-second-account-to-claim-the-savers-match.html\">Roth IRAs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/30\/401ks-alternative-investments.html\">401(k)s<\/a>,&#8221; Hsue said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"red-flags-to-watch-out-for\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>Red flags to watch out for<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Most people \u2014 62% \u2014 say they have encountered financial fraud in the last three years or know someone who has, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/news\/2026\/06\/62-of-americans-have-encountered-financial-fraud\" target=\"_blank\">new report<\/a> from the CFP Board of Standards, which sets and enforces standards for certified financial planners.<\/p>\n<p>There are red flags that are commonalities among scams, Nofziger said. &#8220;Most scams have the same DNA,&#8221; she said. &#8220;They come out of the blue with urgency.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, if the victim is being asked to lie or keep the situation a secret, that should be reason to pause. &#8220;No legitimate opportunity will ask you to lie or keep it a secret,&#8221; Nofziger said.<\/p>\n<p>Fraudsters also try to make victims react with emotion. &#8220;They&#8217;ll get you with fear or get you with excitement \u2026 &#8216;This is the FBI and you&#8217;re going to be in trouble if you don&#8217;t pay me,&#8217; or &#8216;Sweet baby, I have $1 million for you so send me prepaid gift cards to win your prize.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The biggest red flag of all is that they&#8217;re asking you to send money or your personal information,&#8221; Nofziger said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote data-test=\"Pullquote\">\n<div class=\"Pullquote-pullquote\" style=\"border-top-color:#0f8743\">\n<div>\n<p>The biggest red flag of all is that they&#8217;re asking you to send money or your personal information.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Pullquote-sourceWrapper\">\n<p>Amy Nofziger<\/p>\n<p>Senior director of victim support for the AARP Fraud Watch Network<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Also be aware that &#8220;caller IDs and emails and all those forms of communication can spoof where it&#8217;s coming from, so you can&#8217;t always trust that it&#8217;s necessarily the entity that you&#8217;re speaking with,&#8221; Hsue said. Instead of responding to the communication, reach out independently, she said.<\/p>\n<p>If you realize you&#8217;ve been victimized, it&#8217;s important to report it quickly, Hsue said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In some circumstances, either the company or law enforcement can try to get your money back,&#8221; she said. In other cases, it can be difficult to recover money after 24 or 48 hours, she said.<\/p>\n<p>If you encounter an imposter scam \u2014 or any type of financial fraud \u2014 you can report it to the FTC <a href=\"https:\/\/reportfraud.ftc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">via its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Recognize that scams are targeting all of us,&#8221; Nofziger said. &#8220;It has nothing to do with your education or your intelligence level.
