By contrast, 17% of Democrats use crypto. Pew surveyed 8,512 U.S. adults at the end of January. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Crypto] has always had a libertarian streak, and its early adopters tended to align with that ethos \u2014 skepticism of centralized power and government solutions,&#8221; said Colin McLaren, the head of government relations at the Solana Policy Institute, a nonprofit that advocates for the crypto industry. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That ideological DNA maps more naturally onto the right&#8217;s instincts, so it&#8217;s not surprising to see Republican ownership tick up as the technology goes mainstream,&#8221; McLaren said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"more-from-women-and-wealth\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">More from Women and Wealth:<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>A partisan divide recently emerged in investors&#8217; crypto usage, Pew found. <\/p>\n<p>Prior to 2026, Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents were just as likely as Republicans and Republican-leaning independents to say they&#8217;d held crypto, according to Pew&#8217;s data. However, while use among Republicans has increased by six percentage points since 2021, from 16%, it hasn&#8217;t budged among Democrats. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a massive, massive partisan gap,&#8221; said Eli Yokley, U.S. politics analyst at Morning Consult, a nonpartisan research group. <\/p>\n<p>That gap started to emerge around mid-2023, and &#8220;really took off around the time of the 2024 election,&#8221; Yokley said, citing Morning Consult data.<\/p>\n<p>One likely reason for that shift: Trump&#8217;s endorsement and adoption of crypto, Yokley said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote data-test=\"Pullquote\">\n<div class=\"Pullquote-pullquote\" style=\"border-top-color:#0f8743\">\n<div>\n<p>There&#8217;s a massive, massive partisan gap. <\/p>\n<div class=\"Pullquote-sourceWrapper\">\n<p>Eli Yokley<\/p>\n<p>Morning Consult analyst <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;Even as the crypto sector claimed to be bipartisan, its priorities \u2014 deregulation and withdrawn enforcement \u2014 always leaned toward corporate-friendly policies that are mostly, though not exclusively, associated with Republicans,&#8221; said Rick Claypool, a research director at Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy nonprofit. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"theres-no-obama-coin\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>There&#8217;s no &#8216;Obama coin&#8217; <\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Trump&#8217;s stance on crypto has shifted since his first term in office.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1149472282584072192?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> on social media that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/07\/12\/trump-critcizes-bitcoin-cryptocurrencies-questions-facebook-libra.html\">was &#8220;not a fan&#8221; of crypto<\/a>, which he said was &#8220;unregulated&#8221; and &#8220;can facilitate unlawful behavior, including drug trade and other illegal activity.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>However, within a few years, Trump had forayed into the business of digital assets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/09\/trump-world-liberty-financial-crypto-alt5-sigma.html\">swelling his family&#8217;s wealth<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In 2022, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/04\/14\/trump-made-a-bundle-of-cash-selling-nfts-financial-filings-show.html\">launched his first collection of nonfungible tokens<\/a>, better known as NFTs \u2014 a series of $99 digital &#8220;trading cards&#8221; featuring cartoon drawings of him in various heroic postures and outfits. <\/p>\n<p>He and his family have since debuted other digital offerings, including<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/12\/12\/trump-sells-mugshot-suit-mar-a-lago-dinner-in-latest-nft-promotion.html\"> additional NFTs<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/03\/25\/trumps-world-liberty-financial-jumps-into-stablecoin-game-with-usd1-reveal.html\">World Liberty Financial crypto venture<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/20\/melania-trump-launches-cryptocurrency-ahead-of-donald-trumps-inauguration.html\">$TRUMP and $MELANIA memecoins<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The White House has also pushed to make the U.S. the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/crypto\/\" target=\"_blank\">crypto capital of the world<\/a>&#8221; during Trump&#8217;s second term in office, &#8220;including steps to allow crypto firms to become banks,&#8221; according to Pew Research Center. <\/p>\n<p>By the second quarter of 2025, the partisan gap of crypto use peaked at about 11 percentage points, according to Morning Consult data. Specifically, 27.9% of Republicans had bought or sold cryptocurrency in the past 12 months, versus 17.3% of Democrats, it found.<\/p>\n<p>The gap has since declined to about five points, at 23.6% to 17.7%, respectively, according to Morning Consult. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to &#8220;de-couple&#8221; the rise of GOP crypto adoption from the Trump family&#8217;s embrace of it, Yokley said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no Obama coin,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There are Trump coins and Melania coins.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"the-gender-gap-is-a-much-bigger-gap-than-politics\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>&#8216;The gender gap is a much bigger gap than politics&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>However, politics isn&#8217;t the sole driver, experts said. <\/p>\n<p>Demographics like age and gender are also important factors that, alongside politics, are influencing variations in crypto adoption, they said. <\/p>\n<p>For example, about 74% of crypto traders are men, Yokley said, citing Morning Consult data. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Women&#8217;s more cautious approach to speculative investing explains much of this: Crypto traders carry significantly higher consumer confidence and risk tolerance than the general population, and that skew is overwhelmingly male,&#8221; Yokley said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Young men, especially, are &#8220;huge adopters&#8221; of crypto relative to other investors \u2014 a trend that aligns with others, like sports betting, in which there are similar gaps in uptake, Yokley said.  <\/p>\n<p>Men under age 45 have traded crypto at roughly twice the rate of women under age 45 from 2022 to 2026\u2014 around 38% to 42% versus 13% to 16%, respectively, according to Morning Consult. <\/p>\n<p>Young investors broadly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/23\/young-people-crypto-meme-stocks-options-risk-financial-nihilism.html\">have turned more readily to speculative investments<\/a> like meme stocks, leveraged exchange-traded funds, crypto, sports betting platforms and prediction markets, in a trend some experts have called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/26\/bull-market-enters-the-anything-goes-phase-should-you-follow.html\">financial nihilism<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Young men have also &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/faculty-research\/policy-topics\/politics\/young-voters-shifted-right-2024-election-ash-center\" target=\"_blank\">become a bit more conservative<\/a> on the ideological spectrum&#8221;
