\u201cYou know what I really love? I love the inflation<\/a>,\u201d President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a> said Wednesday after the consumer price index climbed above 4%<\/a> for the first time in three years,\u00a0stemming from the Iran war\u2019s surge in energy prices. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe numbers were great,\u201d Trump, speaking with reporters in the Oval Office, said of the CPI<\/a>\u00a0data released by the\u00a0Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

U.S. households have been feeling less enthusiastic<\/a> about the impact of the Middle East conflict on the cost of everyday goods. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York\u2019s monthly Survey of Consumer Expectations showed that the share of those respondents who see their current situation as \u201cmuch worse\u201d than a year ago hit a nearly four-year high.<\/p>\n

The oil shock has put upward pressure on prices at a time when many consumers are already struggling. <\/p>\n

The U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee \u2014 Minority estimates that tariffs and the war with Iran cost each household\u00a0more than $3,100<\/a>\u00a0from 2025 through May of 2026.<\/p>\n

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Elevated prices<\/a>\u00a0on essentials like groceries and gasoline limit how far workers can stretch their paychecks, experts say. <\/p>\n

\u201cFor most American households, they have negative real earnings growth; it\u2019s hard to spin that positively in any way,\u201d said certified financial planner Stephen Kates, a financial analyst at Bankrate.\u00a0\u201cMost of the earnings gains have been erased by this inflation spike.\u201d<\/p>\n

With average hourly earnings rising 3.4% from the previous year, according to the\u00a0Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>, wage growth now\u00a0lags inflation<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

An annual inflation rate at 4.2% means\u00a0\u201cyou are devaluing the assets and the income of U.S. residents \u2014 that is a huge problem,\u201d said Wayne Winegarden, an economist at Pacific Research Institute, a conservative think tank. \u201cTo minimize that impact is troubling.\u201d<\/p>\n

With inflation outpacing paychecks, Americans\u2019 personal savings rate<\/a> also recently hit the lowest level since 2022, according to\u00a0data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Longer-term inflation expectations<\/h2>\n

Trump said again this week that a\u00a0deal with Iran could be reached<\/a> in the days ahead, and that the critical Strait of Hormuz would reopen \u201cimmediately\u201d after that.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once the war is over, inflation is \u201cgoing to come down like a rock,\u201d Trump said Wednesday, even as tensions in the Middle East escalated. \u201cWhen it\u2019s over, you will see oil drop to where it was before,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The comments came after\u00a0Trump said that the U.S. would hit\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u00a0\u201cvery hard\u201d again. <\/p>\n

The president has made many similar comments<\/a> in recent months about a peace deal being nearly at hand. The war crossed the\u00a0100-day mark<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday.<\/p>\n

But even once the U.S. and Iran negotiate a peace deal, the war\u2019s inflationary effects could take weeks or months to unwind, experts say.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe speed of reopening the Strait will be very important for future cost pressures, and consequent pass-through to consumers,\u201d BlackRock fixed income chief Rick Rieder said in a statement Wednesday, referring to the key waterway used to transport\u00a0about a fifth of the world\u2019s oil<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Gas<\/a> prices, which\u00a0have been a particular pain point since the start of the Iran war, may not ease that quickly, according to Bankrate\u2019s Kates.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are still looking at an enormous increase year over year,\u201d Kates said. As of Thursday, consumers paid a national average of $4.13 per gallon, according to\u00a0AAA<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 up from about $3.12 a year ago. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe price level is what people care about, and the price levels are not going back to 2025 \u2014 even if we have no inflation in the next few years, which is impossible,\u201d Kates said.<\/p>\n

Some\u00a0Federal Reserve policymakers have also expressed concerns<\/a>\u00a0that, as the conflict persists, it could raise long-term inflation expectations.<\/p>\n
