A greater share of their spending is allocated to goods that have seen prices soar since the pandemic, such as housing, food and utilities, causing them to cut back on groceries, the researchers found. <\/p>\n<p>A higher cost of living, combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/10\/trumps-big-beautiful-bill-cuts-snap-for-millions-of-families.html\">cuts<\/a> to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/10\/trumps-big-beautiful-bill-cuts-snap-for-millions-of-families.html\">Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program<\/a>, or SNAP, &#8220;have led to renewed concerns about food insecurity among those at the bottom of the K-shape,&#8221; the New York Fed researchers wrote.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Households have struggled with the expiration of pandemic-era aid, including expanded SNAP benefits, formerly known as food stamps, researchers said. More recently, President Donald Trump&#8217;s &#8220;big beautiful bill&#8221; tightened the work requirements for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/03\/medicaid-snap-work-requirements-retirement.html\">SNAP benefits<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Nearly 14% of American households were food insecure in 2024, according to the most recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/topics\/food-nutrition-assistance\/food-security-in-the-us\/key-statistics-graphics?_ppp=d07492bbaf#foodsecure\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>\u00a0by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The New York Fed said\u00a0that food insecurity is likely linked\u00a0to why Americans now feel worse off even as the economy overall has expanded at a solid pace since the Covid pandemic. <\/p>\n<p>After a series of recent financial shocks, consumer sentiment has been on a downward trend. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sca.isr.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">The University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers<\/a>, a closely watched bellwether, hit all-time lows in May.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Consumers overall have been pessimistic about their own financial circumstances and outlook,&#8221; the New York Fed researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>But there is also &#8220;significant&#8221; variation across households, the New York Fed researchers found, &#8220;supporting the notion of a &#8216;K-shaped&#8217; economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"the-rise-of-the-k-shape\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>The rise of the K-shape<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Stock market rallies and appreciating home values tend to buoy high-earner households, who disproportionately own such assets, and leave lower-income households behind.<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/01\/01\/the-covid-recession-brought-extreme-inequality-in-2020.html\">turbocharged those dynamics<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 as stock and housing wealth soared while lower-income households struggled to keep up with rising prices \u2014 giving rise to the concept of a K-shaped economy.<\/p>\n<p>Now, gasoline prices are dragging down the lower prong of the K, too.
