That&#8217;s\u00a0up from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/10\/cpi-inflation-march-2026-breakdown.html\">3.3% in March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The April data paints a clearer picture of the financial fallout for consumers after, at that point, more than a month of conflict in the Middle East. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;American households are going to continue to struggle trying to manage through this, and that&#8217;s going to be the case for the foreseeable future,&#8221; said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"high-oil-prices-create-a-double-squeeze\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>High oil prices create a &#8216;double squeeze&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Earlier this week, President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0rejected Iran&#8217;s latest proposal to end the war, sending oil futures higher. <\/p>\n<p>Iran has continued to restrict energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway used to transport\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/07\/oil-prices-iran-war-trump-deadline-strait-hormuz.html\">about a fifth of the world&#8217;s oil<\/a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s like the aorta artery in your body,&#8221; said Brian Bethune, an economics professor at Boston College. &#8220;When that is choked down, it is the whole global economy that is affected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oil prices \u2014 as measured by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@LCO.1\/\">Brent crude oil<\/a>, a global price benchmark \u2014 spiked to $118 per barrel by the end of April from roughly $70 per barrel before the conflict began. Prices remain above <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/12\/oil-prices-today-brent-wti-trump-iran-war-hormuz.html\">$107 a barrel<\/a> as of early Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Products refined from oil, such as gasoline and jet fuel, have risen sharply, too.<\/p>\n<p>Gas prices soared about 50%\u00a0since the war with Iran began on Feb. 28 and are up 28.4% over the year, according to the CPI data. <\/p>\n<p>Consumers paid a national average of $4.50 per gallon as of Tuesday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">AAA<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 up from about $3.14 a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Airline fares also rose 20.7% over the past 12 months, according to the CPI data.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The sudden and steep rise is an example of how the cost of jet fuel is being passed directly to travelers, said certified financial planner Stephen Kates, a financial analyst at Bankrate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Consumers are currently trapped in a &#8216;double squeeze,&#8217; wrestling with both the acute pain of the gasoline price spike and the slow rise in other core budget items,&#8221; Kates said. &#8220;Households will find it harder to shift budget dollars from one category to another when most major categories are becoming more expensive at the same time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"the-iran-wars-effect-on-food-prices\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>The Iran war&#8217;s effect on food prices<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>As the conflict persists, the oil shock has put upward pressure on food prices, as well, economists said. <\/p>\n<p>For example, an increase in diesel prices affects the transportation costs of trucking food to grocery stores, according to Boston College&#8217;s Bethune. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;It takes some time for the fuel surcharges that are built into these contracts to work their way through the system,&#8221; Bethune said.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, fertilizer is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/25\/fertilizer-price-iran-war-food-security-inflation-urea-potash-nitrogen-farmers.html\">another key export through the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, threatening to raise prices for farmers. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108287548\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>A customer shops for beef at a grocery store on April 6, 2026 in Los Angeles, California. <\/p>\n<p>Justin Sullivan | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;You can see the pass-through gaining momentum,&#8221; Zandi said. <\/p>\n<p>Food prices increased 3.2% over the last year, according to the CPI data.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For most families, what matters most is the cost of a gallon of unleaded gas and a pound of beef, and both are up quite a lot,&#8221; Zandi said. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/26\/trump-beef-egg-chicken-food-prices.html\">Beef<\/a>\u00a0prices rose 14.8% year over year, according to the CPI data.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"inflation-may-unwind-slowly\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>Inflation may unwind slowly<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Economists say that the inflationary effects of the war could take weeks or months to unwind.<\/p>\n<p>Even if more oil tankers get through the Strait of Hormuz, it may be a while before the whole supply chain starts working again, Bethune said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;If we get some resolution, optimistically, within the next few weeks, it then might be two months for things to start to normalize,&#8221; Bethune said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pessimistic scenario is at least double that or even longer \u2014 that could be six to nine months to get back to where we were in January or February,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"the-fed-under-pressure\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline3\"\/>The Fed under pressure<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The latest inflation reading only reinforces expectations that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/federal-reserve\/\">Federal Reserve<\/a> will keep interest rates unchanged for a while \u2014 doing little to ease consumers&#8217; current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/29\/fed-interest-rates-april.html\">affordability challenges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Federal Reserve, soon to be led by Kevin Warsh, is in a very difficult position because it cannot ignore an annual inflation rate climbing back toward 4%,&#8221; said Bankrate&#8217;s Kates. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The trajectory of inflation will not immediately reverse, even if geopolitical tensions ease, making it highly unlikely that we will see any interest rate cuts this year,&#8221;
