But it may not be enough for all filers, experts say. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"how-withholdings-impacted-filers-this-season\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>How withholdings impacted filers this season <\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Roughly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/filing-season-statistics-for-week-ending-april-17-2026\" target=\"_blank\"> 66% of individual returns<\/a> have delivered a refund during the 2026 filing season, up from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/filing-season-statistics-for-week-ending-april-18-2025\" target=\"_blank\"> around 62%<\/a> from about the same point last year, according to the latest IRS data through April 17.<\/p>\n<p>During a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pZkR47nS1e8\" target=\"_blank\">White House press briefing<\/a> on April 15, Treasury Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/15\/cnbc-transcript-us-treasury-secretary-scott-bessent-spoke-with-cnbcs-sara-eisen-at-cnbcs-invest-in-america-forum-in-washington-dc-today-wednesday-april-15.html\">Scott Bessent<\/a> said workers should update their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/17\/tax-withholding-2026.html\">2026 paycheck withholdings<\/a> for an &#8220;automatic real wage increase.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But some tax professionals criticized this advice, noting that workers should calculate withholdings based on their unique situation. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how the IRS tax withholding estimator can help \u2014 and who should use it, according to experts. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-know-about-the-irs-tax-withholding-tool\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>What to know about the IRS tax withholding tool<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;The IRS withholding estimator is actually a solid tool,&#8221; especially for W-2 workers with &#8220;straightforward situations,&#8221; said certified financial planner Joon Um, managing owner of financial firm Secure Tax and Accounting in Hayward, California.<\/p>\n<p>However, it can fall short amid tax complexity, such as multiple sources of income, side businesses, bonuses, stock-based compensation, rental income and more, experts say. <\/p>\n<p>Accuracy also depends on entering the correct information.
