{"id":43125,"date":"2026-04-17T19:13:39","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T19:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=43125"},"modified":"2026-04-17T19:13:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T19:13:39","slug":"average-tax-refund-is-11-2-higher-latest-irs-filing-data-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=43125","title":{"rendered":"Average tax refund is 11.2% higher, latest IRS filing data shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108293246\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Milan Markovic | E+ | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/10\/average-tax-refund.html\">average tax refund<\/a>\u00a0is 11.2% higher this season, compared with about the same period in 2025, according to the latest IRS filing data.<\/p>\n<p>As of April 10, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/filing-season-statistics-for-week-ending-april-10-2026\" target=\"_blank\">average refund amount<\/a>\u00a0for individual filers was $3,397, up from $3,055 about one year ago, the IRS reported on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The IRS data reflects about 114 million individual returns received, out of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs-opens-2026-filing-season\" target=\"_blank\">about 164 million expected<\/a>\u00a0through Tax Day. Next week&#8217;s filing update is expected to include data through the April 15 deadline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s 2025 legislation, rebranded to the &#8220;working families tax cuts,&#8221; was a key talking point for Republicans on Tax Day. <\/p>\n<p>With the November midterm elections approaching and Republicans defending slim majorities in Congress, many GOP lawmakers have highlighted Trump&#8217;s tax breaks and higher average refunds. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, affordability has been top of mind for many Americans amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/10\/cpi-inflation-march-2026-breakdown.html\">rising costs<\/a>\u00a0of gas, electricity, food and other living expenses.<\/p>\n<p>For filers who expected a refund this season, nearly one-quarter, or 23%, planned to use the funds to pay down credit card debt, and the same share said they would save the payment, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/curiosity\/cnbc-money-survey-affordability-april-2026\/?utm_source=cnbc_2026\" target=\"_blank\">CNBC and SurveyMonkey Quarterly Money Survey<\/a>, released in April. It polled 3,494 U.S. adults at the end of March.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"who-benefited-from-trumps-big-beautiful-bill\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Who benefited from Trump&#8217;s &#8216;big beautiful bill&#8217;\u00a0<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been a great tax season for the American people,&#8221; many of whom have benefited from Trump&#8217;s tax breaks, Treasury Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/15\/cnbc-transcript-us-treasury-secretary-scott-bessent-spoke-with-cnbcs-sara-eisen-at-cnbcs-invest-in-america-forum-in-washington-dc-today-wednesday-april-15.html\">Scott Bessent<\/a> said during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pZkR47nS1e8\" target=\"_blank\">White House press briefing<\/a> on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than 53 million filers claimed at least one of Trump&#8217;s &#8220;signature new tax cuts&#8221; \u2014 the deductions for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/23\/no-tax-on-tips-who-benefits.html\">tip income<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/06\/trump-no-tax-on-overtime.html\">overtime earnings<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/18\/big-beautiful-bill-senior-deduction.html\">seniors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/13\/interest-on-new-car-loans-tax-deductible.html\">auto loan interest<\/a> \u2014 the U.S. Department of the Treasury also announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Those filers, who claimed the deductions on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/f1040s1a.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Schedule 1-A<\/a>, have seen an average tax cut of over $800, according to the Treasury. Tax cuts can trigger a higher refund or reduce taxes owed, depending on the filer&#8217;s situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108289111\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108289111\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000409178\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Some filers who itemize tax breaks have also seen benefits from the bigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/03\/trumps-big-beautiful-bill-salt-deduction.html\">federal deduction limit for state and local taxes<\/a>, known as SALT.
