New borrowing limits for 2026 under President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/guide\/what-trumps-one-big-beautiful-bill-means-for-your-money\/\">big beautiful bill<\/a>&#8221; are another factor. Plus, students are increasingly seeking job training and career-driven pathways to secure a foothold in today&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/06\/college-graduates-job-market-unemployment.html\">challenging labor market<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Students aged 18 to 20 represented the largest share of first-time associate degree earners in the 2024-25 academic year \u2014 accounting for nearly one-third, according to a new report from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nscresearchcenter.org\/undergraduate-degree-earners\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Student Clearinghouse Research Center<\/a>. For the first time, this age group surpassed those aged 21 to 24, the report found.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Typically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/higher-education\/find-college-or-educational-program\/community-college\/community-college-facts-glance\" target=\"_blank\">community college students<\/a> tend to be older than students at four-year colleges or universities, but over the last decade, the number of 18- to 20-year-olds who received an associate degree jumped nearly 50%, the report found.  <\/p>\n<p>About 2 million students earned a bachelor&#8217;s degree as their highest academic credential in 2024-25, while 865,400 earned an associate degree, up 2.8% and 2.6%, respectively, from the previous year, according to the NSCRC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/nscresearchcenter.org\/undergraduate-degree-earners-embargo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Undergraduate Degree Earners\u00a0report<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Another 579,400 students earned an undergraduate certificate as their highest award, notching a 3.2% increase from the year before and a decade-high. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More students are earning certificates and degrees earlier, and that shift reflects how postsecondary pathways are changing and starting sooner than they once did,&#8221; Matthew Holsapple, the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center&#8217;s senior director of research, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108252598\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108252598\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000400984\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The trend is likely to continue. In the fall, community college enrollment rose 3% from the prior academic year, compared to a 1.4% increase at public four-year colleges, according to an earlier report also from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nscresearchcenter.org\/final-fall-enrollment-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\">NSCRC<\/a>. Enrollment in private four-year nonprofit institutions fell by 1.6% over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The data shows students gravitating toward more practical, career-oriented pathways,&#8221; said Christopher Rim, president and CEO of college consulting firm Command Education. Certificate programs jumped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentclearinghouse.org\/nscblog\/higher-ed-enrollment-continues-its-comeback-after-pandemic-era-dip\/\" target=\"_blank\">6.6%<\/a> last year, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/08\/jobs-apocalypse-ai-proof-skilled-trades.html\">trade schools<\/a> are seeing noticeable growth as well, he said.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Students are increasingly pursuing continuing education that they believe directly correlates to employment outcomes,&#8221; Rim said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"the-advantages-of-a-two-year-degree\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>The advantages of a two-year degree<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/15\/four-year-college-loses-ground-community-college-gains-steam.html\">the benefits<\/a>\u00a0of community college are obvious. <\/p>\n<p>Noticeably, the cost: At two-year public schools,\u00a0tuition and fees averaged $4,150 for the 2025-2026 academic year, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/trends.collegeboard.org\/college-pricing\/figures-tables\/tuition-fees-room-board-time\" target=\"_blank\">College Board<\/a>. Alternatively, at four-year public colleges, in-state tuition and fees averaged $11,950, and at four-year private schools, $45,000.<\/p>\n<p>Under President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/guide\/what-trumps-one-big-beautiful-bill-means-for-your-money\/\">big beautiful bill<\/a>,&#8221; which Congress passed last year,\u00a0students enrolling in workforce training programs at community colleges may also be eligible for Pell Grants, a type of aid awarded solely based on financial need. The grants are worth up to $7,395 for the 2025-26 academic year. Previously, these funds were only available to degree-seeking undergraduate students.<\/p>\n<p>Further, shorter programs can be just as effective when it comes to employability in certain industries, according to Eric Greenberg, president of Greenberg Educational Group, a New York City-based consulting firm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It means less tuition and, in many cases, it means the same output,&#8221; Greenberg said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Are these degrees looked at as shortcuts? The answer is, not necessarily,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There&#8217;s a market out there for skillsets that don&#8217;t necessarily require a larger number of years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>In some cases, community college is considered a stepping stone to a four-year school. <\/p>\n<p>Starting at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/college\/\">community college<\/a>\u00a0and then transferring is often recommended as one way to\u00a0get a bachelor&#8217;s\u00a0degree\u00a0for significantly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/student-loans\/\">less money<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, research suggests this is not as successful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/02\/13\/community-college-transfer-pathway-doesnt-work-for-everyone.html\">a pathway<\/a> as experts have hoped. <\/p>\n<p>Nationwide, only about one-third of students who start at community colleges ultimately transfer to four-year schools, according to several <a href=\"https:\/\/ccrc.tc.columbia.edu\/publications\/Tracking-Transfer-Community-College-and-Four-Year-Institutional-Effectiveness-in-Broadening-Bachelors-Degree-Attainment.html\" target=\"_blank\">long-term studies<\/a>.
