But it was not an easy month for investors. <\/p>\n<p>In March, the <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.SPX\/\">S&P 500<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.DJI\/\">Dow Jones<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.IXIC\/\">Nasdaq<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> indices each fell around 5% \u2014 capping off a losing quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Investors may want to brace themselves for more dramatic swings: The markets are poised to be \u201cextremely sensitive to headlines, both positive and negative,\u201d said Jack Manley, global market strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow is still a good time to be taking risk, but realize it is going to be a choppy, bumpy ride over the course of this year,\u201d Manley said.<\/p>\n<p>While jittery investors may be tempted to sit out the market turbulence, those who move in and out of investments stand to lose the most, JPMorgan Asset Management data shows.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>In the past two decades, six of the market\u2019s 10 best days happened within two weeks of its 10 worst days, according to the firm\u2019s<strong> <\/strong>analysis of S&P 500 data. The second-worst day of 2020, March 12, was immediately followed by the second-best day of the year. <\/p>\n<p>Investors who stay fully invested stand to earn the best returns, JPMorgan Asset Management found. The more \u201cbest days\u201d investors miss by moving in and out of the markets, the worse their returns, the firm\u2019s data shows.<\/p>\n<p>To better weather the volatility, it also helps to stay diversified, Manley said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"u-s-equities-a-great-place-to-generate-wealth\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>U.S. equities a \u2018great place to generate wealth\u2019<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>A set-it-and-forget-it S&P 500 index investment strategy comprised of large-cap U.S. equities has been a winner, with three consecutive years of double-digit gains<strong> <\/strong>\u2014 around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/30\/stock-market-today-live-updates.html\">16% in 2025<\/a>, 23% in 2024 and 24% in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The S&P 500 is not on pace to match those gains in 2026, as it is down about 3.5% year to date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn any given year, you might have a bad year being a U.S. stock investor,\u201d Manley said. \u201cBut over the long run, history has shown very clearly that U.S. equities are a great place to generate wealth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While headlines about the conflict in Iran sway the markets, other events like the U.S. intervention in Venezuela, talk of acquiring Greenland and the collapse of the Japanese bond market were already fueling uncertainty. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not like this market was on fire before the conflict kicked off,\u201d Manley said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108286092\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108286092\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000408506\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>To prepare for prospective market choppiness, it\u2019s best to stay diversified, Manley said, with exposure to international, fixed-income and other categories like real estate or real assets that are uncorrelated to market returns.<\/p>\n<p>Having a plan can also help investors stay the course when emotional or stressful unexpected events arise, said Brian Schmehil, a certified financial planner and managing director of wealth management at The Mather Group in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, that includes enough cash to provide for short-term goals and a \u201cgood game plan\u201d for long-term investments, Schmehil said.<\/p>\n<p>By rebalancing regularly and understanding your personal risk tolerance, investors have a better chance of staying the course, according to Schmehil, rather than bailing if their portfolio balance or emotions reach uncomfortable coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>It also helps to use a reputable financial advisor as a sounding board, Schmehil said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody thinks the wealth advisor is supposed to pick the best stocks or give you the best tax strategy,\u201d Schmehil said. \u201cThat is true, but with the age of AI, a lot of that stuff\u2019s going to be table stakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s really going to matter is having somebody that can understand your emotions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div
