{"id":42530,"date":"2026-03-27T19:02:58","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T19:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=42530"},"modified":"2026-03-27T19:02:58","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T19:02:58","slug":"average-irs-tax-refund-is-up-10-9-latest-filing-data-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=42530","title":{"rendered":"Average IRS tax refund is up 10.9%, latest filing data shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108284160\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Pheelings Media | Istock | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/20\/average-irs-tax-refund.html\">average tax refund<\/a>\u00a0is 10.9% higher so far this season, compared with about the same period in 2025, according to the latest IRS filing data.<\/p>\n<p>As of March 20, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/filing-season-statistics-for-week-ending-march-20-2026\" target=\"_blank\">average refund amount<\/a>\u00a0for individual filers was $3,571, up from $3,221 roughly one year ago, the IRS reported on Friday.  <\/p>\n<p>The IRS data reflects about 79 million individual returns received, out of about 164 million expected through the April 15 deadline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"how-average-tax-refunds-could-shift\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>How average tax refunds could shift <\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>After several weeks of average refund data, it&#8217;s &#8220;less likely we&#8217;re going to see a major change&#8221; before the April 15 tax deadline, William McBride, chief economist at the Tax Foundation, told CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>But the average could still rise as taxpayers claim the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/03\/trumps-big-beautiful-bill-salt-deduction.html\">bigger deduction for state and local taxes<\/a>, known as SALT, he said. Trump&#8217;s legislation raised the SALT limit to $40,000, up from $10,000, for 2025.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a pretty big deal for higher-income folks that live in expensive cities,&#8221; McBride said. &#8220;Those people don&#8217;t tend to file [tax returns] early.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>While many<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/12\/tax-return-audit-key-tax-forms.html\"> tax forms<\/a> arrive by late January, higher-earning investors could wait longer for forms detailing brokerage account assets or business income, experts say.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>However, you must itemize tax breaks, rather than claim the standard deduction, to benefit from the more generous SALT cap for 2025.   <\/p>\n<p>During tax year 2022, nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/p4801.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">90% of returns<\/a>\u00a0used the standard deduction, based on the latest IRS data.
