But that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/26\/oil-price-wti-brent-crude-iran-rejects-direct-us-trump-talks-hormuz.html\">drop reversed on Thursday<\/a> after the country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/25\/iran-war-us-trump.html\">rejected the U.S. ceasefire offer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, American consumers are still paying higher prices at the pump. The price of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/oil-gas\/\">gasoline<\/a> on Thursday was at a nationwide average of $3.98 a gallon, up by roughly 33% from one month ago, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">AAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Those higher gas prices could chip away at the windfall received by some taxpayers this spring. As of Mar. 13, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/filing-season-statistics-for-week-ending-march-13-2026\" target=\"_blank\">average refund amount<\/a> for individual filers was $3,623, about $350 more than a year earlier, according to the latest IRS data. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>While the average refund size could still shift, it\u2019s increasingly \u201cless likely we\u2019re going to see a major change\u201d before the April 15 tax deadline, William McBride, chief economist at the Tax Foundation, told CNBC. <\/p>\n<p>This season\u2019s bigger tax refunds come as both parties focus on Americans\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/24\/affordability-is-a-buzzword-right-now-these-charts-show-why.html\">affordability concerns<\/a>. Republicans hold slim majorities in the House and Senate ahead of the November midterm elections. <\/p>\n<p>Trump has said this will be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/18\/trump-bigger-tax-refunds.html\">\u201clargest tax refund season of all time<\/a>\u201d based on the 2025 changes enacted via his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/03\/trump-big-beautiful-bill-tax-changes.html\">\u201cbig beautiful bill.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"higher-gasoline-prices-could-offset-bigger-tax-refunds\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Higher gasoline prices could offset bigger tax refunds<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>If the Strait of Hormuz were closed for three weeks and crude oil prices jumped to $110 per barrel in March, retail gasoline prices could peak at $4.36 per gallon in May, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/nealemahoney.substack.com\/p\/spiking-gasoline-prices-may-wipe\" target=\"_blank\">March 18 analysis<\/a> from economists at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.<\/p>\n<p>Under that scenario, higher gasoline prices could be \u201cwiping out most or all of the larger tax refunds on average,\u201d the authors wrote.  <\/p>\n<p>The analysis, which included <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-16\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GS\/\">Goldman Sachs<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2018 baseline Brent crude oil forecast from March 17, projected the average U.S. household could pay $740 more for gas through year-end, without changes to demand. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>A separate Goldman Sachs note released March 22 upgraded its oil price forecasts, with March through April Brent crude oil estimates averaging $110 per barrel.  <\/p>\n<p>However, \u201cthe U.S. could end military action at any point, which would likely reduce the risk premium in global crude and refined product prices,\u201d Goldman Sachs analysts wrote.   <\/p>\n<p>In a March 20 note, Oxford Economics estimated that if gas prices averaged $3.60 per gallon in 2026, consumer spending on fuel could be \u201calmost exactly offsetting the boost from refunds.\u201d     <\/p>\n<p>Of course, the longer the conflict lasts, the more it could impact consumers at the pump. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe energy shock is going to hit those who have the least cushion \u2026 and it doesn\u2019t look like those tax refunds are going to be here to save them,\u201d Alex Jacquez, chief of policy and advocacy at Groundwork Collaborative, a left-leaning economic policy think tank, said during a press call Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\"
