I went to college and then left,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I sort of bounced around from job to job throughout the years until I eventually landed on trades.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Vandall is now enrolled in Rosedale Technical College in Pittsburgh. After the 16-month program, the school&#8217;s job placement program typically puts students directly into a position in the field \u2014 an increasingly rare feat in today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/jobs\/\">job market<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"a-potential-jobs-apocalypse\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>A potential jobs apocalypse<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>As advances in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/04\/white-collar-layoffs-ai-cost-cutting-tariffs.html\">artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0reshape the workforce, fewer entry-level positions are available for college graduates. More large employers have announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/27\/block-mass-layoffs.html\">massive job cuts<\/a>, and some experts say this is the start of an AI-driven,\u00a0white-collar recession or even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/27\/are-dorseys-giant-job-cuts-the-start-of-an-ai-jobs-apocalypse-economists-weigh-in.html\">jobs apocalypse<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The fear is that as AI capabilities improve, companies will need fewer workers and white-collar layoffs will increase, creating a &#8220;negative feedback loop with no natural brake,&#8221; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citriniresearch.com\/p\/2028gic\" target=\"_blank\">Citrini Research&#8217;s recent report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, a\u00a0shortage of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/21\/career-signing-days-celebrate-students-going-into-skilled-trades.html\">skilled tradespeople<\/a>, largely due to experienced workers aging out of the field, is not only boosting the number of job opportunities in some industries but also the pay. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jobs in the skilled trades &#8220;are the underdog and so AI-proof,&#8221; said Monster\u00a0career expert Vicki Salemi. &#8220;They require physical presence, and they are less likely to be fully automated or offshored,&#8221; she said. Further, &#8220;many have union membership, so there is job protection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108070085\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108070085\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000359602\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108070086-17331665321733166528-37379898713-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1733166530&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"There's a lot of upside ahead for skilled trade programs, says UTI CEO Jerome Grant\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Electricians, for example, rank among the highest-paying trade jobs in demand, according to the job site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/career-advice\/finding-a-job\/highest-paying-trade-jobs\" target=\"_blank\">Indeed<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;This is where the jobs are, and they pay well,&#8221; Salemi said.<\/p>\n<p>The median annual salary for U.S. electricians was $62,350 in 2024, and employment in the profession is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/construction-and-extraction\/electricians.htm\" target=\"_blank\">projected to grow 9%<\/a> over a decade \u2014 much faster than the average for all occupations \u2014 according to the most recent occupational handbook from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. <\/p>\n<p>More recent BLS data from 2025 shows that weekly median earnings for electricians are $1,376 \u2014 14% higher than the national median. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"the-retirement-cliff\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>The &#8216;retirement cliff&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Every year, more electricians retire than new ones enter the field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a large retirement cliff happening,&#8221; said Ian Andrews, vice president of labor relations at the National Electrical Contractors Association, a trade group representing the electrical contracting\u00a0industry. &#8220;On the union side, we are losing about 20,000 electricians a year, and we have 80,000 openings,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The demand for skilled labor is at an all-time high.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Major industries in this country &#8220;cannot find people&#8221; to fill roles, long-time politician\u00a0and former Chicago Mayor\u00a0Rahm Emanuel said during a discussion on career-driven pathways at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/events\/from-skills-to-jobs-building-clearer-pathways-to-good-work\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brookings Institution<\/a> in February. &#8220;Have a productive life in the trades that AI cannot destroy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Andrews, &#8220;you are working with your hands\u2026it is not something that a computer can manually replace, so there is long-term stability that your office jobs no longer have.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-105786664\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>kadmy | iStock | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Many younger workers are already on board. Applications to apprenticeship programs have jumped 70% since 2022, Andrews said. <\/p>\n<p>At Rosedale Technical College, where students can also study automotive technology, diesel mechanics, carpentry, welding and other skilled trades, enrollment is up 36% in the last five years, according to the school. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s a great opportunity, a great way to get your foot in the door, get started, get educated and feel completely prepared about what you&#8217;re getting into, especially something like electrical\u2026 you really need to know what you&#8217;re doing,&#8221; Vandall said of his trade school experience. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"college-costs-are-a-major-factor\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>College costs are a major factor<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>In addition to providing students with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/16\/post-pandemic-four-years-of-college-steadily-loses-its-appeal.html\">career-connected pathway<\/a>\u00a0to help address labor shortages, job training programs are also a lot less expensive than a four-year college. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The rising cost of higher education and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/student-loans\/\">student loan debt<\/a> that often goes along with it are significant factors driving more students\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/15\/four-year-college-loses-ground-community-college-gains-steam.html\">toward short-term programs<\/a>, research shows. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At four-year public colleges, in-state tuition and fees averaged $11,950 for the 2025-2026 academic year, while at four-year private schools, those costs averaged $45,000.
