It stars strangers as well as musicians: I\u2019ve had Lily Allen, Charli XCX and FKA Twigs on. Basically, I play a song and the contestant has to identify the artist who recorded it. The prize money starts at $5 for the first song and doubles with every correct answer until my guest either gets one wrong and loses it all or decides to stop playing. (The cash \u201cprize\u201d is\u00a0often donated to charity.) We ask guests to\u00a0name the artist because I\u2019m interested in different musical signatures. You know a Stevie Wonder song when you hear it \u2013 but maybe not the title. I appreciate many musical genres \u2013 everything from\u00a0classical music to indie pop\u00a0and country. I prepare for my\u00a0guest interviews by reading biographies that I\u00a0pick up at the\u00a0Strand bookstore, and by\u00a0listening to their music obsessively. Because of that, many artistic styles and musical genres have popped up. Jazz, the greatest American musical art form, really flourished in New York, particularly at clubs such as Birdland, which is still open, as well as the Three Deuces and the Famous Door on \u201cSwing Street\u201d in Midtown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the city has been the crucible for many other genres going back to Tin Pan Alley \u2013 now the NoMad area \u2013 which was active from the 1890s through the 1970s. The Brill Building \u2013 a former office space for record labels and recording studios \u2013 was its epicentre; Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole and Paul Simon all wrote music in those offices. I also love shows at Madison Square Garden \u2013 I\u2019ve seen Dead &amp; Company, Eagles, Billy Joel and Drake there. The collective experience of walking into an\u00a0arena with 22,000 people and everyone cheering for the same team is exhilarating. The Bowery Ballroom and the Music Hall of Williamsburg hold just 1,000 or so people. Nightclub 101 on Avenue A, where they showcase a mix of emerging artists, is even smaller. Brooklyn tends to be where more interesting things happen because it\u2019s more affordable: I like Cafe Erzulie for local jazz and Brooklyn Paramount, where I recently saw the Irish post-punk band Fontaines DC.<\/p>\n<p>Further north, you\u2019ve got the Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, a great outdoor music venue \u2013 Chappell Roan played four nights there. And The Apollo and the United Palace are both icons; I saw Neil Young at the Palace with my dad in high school and I\u2019ll never forget it. Although I like two of my favourite spots \u2013 Vic\u2019s for pizza and Il Buco Alimentari &amp; Vineria, which does great cured meats and cheeses \u2013 because they don\u2019t play loud\u00a0music. If you\u2019re looking for more of a\u00a0\u201cscene\u201d,\u00a0the restaurant Jean\u2019s is the place for\u00a0spotting musicians after a show.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find one of the best pints of Guinness in\u00a0New York at Swift Hibernian Lounge in downtown Manhattan. I think it has something to do with their supply chain and the way they pour. All of those artists feel so tied to New York. The current equivalent of that is probably a band called Geese, a group of kids from Park Slope, Brooklyn, on the path to making it big. New\u00a0York can be expensive and difficult, but it\u2019s the centre of the action and creative people want to be here. It\u2019s definitely worth\u00a0the price of admission.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"n-content-layout\" data-layout-name=\"card\" data-layout-width=\"full-width\">\n<div class=\"n-content-layout__container\">\n<div class=\"n-content-layout__slot\">\n<p><strong>BARS, CAF\u00c9S AND RESTAURANTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Il Buco Alimentari &amp;
