That\u2019s a 5.5% jump from a year earlier. <\/p>\n<p>The central bank\u2019s monthly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/newsevents\/news\/research\/2026\/20260209\" target=\"_blank\">Survey of Consumer Expectations<\/a>, released Monday, also found that fewer consumers expect their households\u2019 financial situations to be better off a year from now \u2014 and a larger share expect to be worse off.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"evidence-consistent-with-a-k-shaped-economy\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>\u2018Evidence consistent with a K-shaped\u00a0economy\u2019<\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108119907\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Julpo | E+ | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Near the end of the year, credit card debt often ticks higher as consumers increase their spending during the peak holiday shopping season. \u201cGiven what we are seeing in the labor market, spending is holding up quite well,\u201d the New York Fed researchers said on a press call Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>Even as the job market shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/05\/layoff-and-hiring-announcements-hit-their-worst-january-levels-since-2009-challenger-says.html\">signs of strain<\/a>, consumer spending has largely stayed strong. However, that has been attributed to robust buying by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/10\/december-retail-sales-were-flat-missing-expectations.html\">higher-end consumers<\/a>, other research shows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see evidence consistent with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/23\/k-shaped-spending-sectors-showing-bifurcation.html\">\u2018K-shaped\u2019<\/a>\u00a0economy,\u201d the New York Fed researchers said. \u201cSome groups are href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/13\/car-loan-payments-top-1000-for-more-drivers.html\">auto loan<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/12\/trump-credit-card-interest-rate-cap.html\">credit card<\/a>\u00a0and home equity lines of credit delinquencies, the New York Fed researchers said. \u201cYou also see that in rising mortgage delinquency rates,\u201d the researchers said, referring to the growing number of homeowners who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/02\/mortgage-delinquencies-housing-affordability.html\">falling behind on their mortgage payments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Across the board, \u201celevated delinquency rates are more pronounced in the lowest-income areas,\u201d the Fed researchers also found.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"affordability-puts-pressure-on-credit-card-debt\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Affordability puts pressure on credit card debt<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Meanwhile, with an average credit card rate of around 20%, credit cards are one of the most expensive ways to borrow money. Currently, about 175 million people in the U.S. have credit cards, and while some pay their bills in full each month, roughly 60% of credit card users carry a balance from one month to the next, according to the New York Fed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump\u2019s call for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/10\/trump-calls-for-one-year-cap-on-credit-card-interest-rates-at-10percent.html\">temporary 10% cap<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0credit cards, could mean\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/26\/trump-credit-card-rate-cap-credit-score.html\">significantly lower interest rate charges<\/a>\u00a0for those with revolving debt. Yet, banks and industry executives have said they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/13\/trump-credit-card-rate-cap-jpmorgan-chase-banks-fight.html\">would fight<\/a> credit card price controls, just as they\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/07\/credit-card-aprs-banks-keep-high-rates-inspired-by-now-dead-cfpb-rule.html\">successfully fought<\/a>\u00a0the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau\u2019s efforts to cap card late fees last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>More than half, 55%, of consumers carry credit card balances to cover essential expenses, according to a separate report by debt management company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.achieve.com\/about\/press\/achieve-survey-finds-over-half-of-consumers-face-tough-tradeoffs-managing-household-debt\" target=\"_blank\">Achieve<\/a> released Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Among those falling behind, many have had to choose between keeping up with debt payments and covering everyday necessities, the survey of 2,000 consumers found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what the K-shaped economy looks like in the real world. There\u2019s an affluent half of the population whose financial lives aren\u2019t disrupted by momentary inconveniences.
