{"id":40879,"date":"2026-02-05T18:03:22","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T18:03:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=40879"},"modified":"2026-02-05T18:03:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T18:03:22","slug":"what-to-know-about-switching-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=40879","title":{"rendered":"What to know about switching plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108261465\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Morsa Images | Digitalvision | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Consumers enrolled in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/medicare\/\">Medicare<\/a> Advantage health insurance are in the middle of a short annual window when they can reassess their coverage options \u2014 and experts say it\u2019s smart to do so this year as both the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and private insurers consider changes. <\/p>\n<p>CMS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/cms-proposes-2027-medicare-advantage-part-d-payment-policies-improve-payment-accuracy-sustainability\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> in late January new proposed policies for Medicare Advantage and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/03\/medicare-prescription-drug-cost-changes.html\">Part D<\/a> that are aimed at ensuring payments to insurers are accurate, according to the agency. It also proposed new Medicare Advantage payment rates that would be mostly flat \u2014 up just 0.9% from 2026 to 2027, representing $700 million in payments to plans.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s payment rate determines how much insurers can charge enrollees for premiums and plan benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Stocks of large health care companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/26\/health-insurers-tumble-after-trump-proposes-keeping-medicare-rates-flat.html\">tumbled on the announcement<\/a>. Analysts were expecting a 4% to 6% increase, and insurers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercehealthcare.com\/regulatory\/cms-proposes-flat-ma-rates-risk-adjustment-updates-2027\" target=\"_blank\">have said<\/a> that the proposed rates may prompt benefit cuts or plan closures.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, more than half \u2014 54% \u2014 of Medicare beneficiaries were enrolled in Medicare Advantage, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/medicare-advantage-enrollment-update-and-key-trends\" target=\"_blank\">KFF<\/a>, a nonpartisan health policy, research, polling and news organization. About 34.1 million beneficiaries were enrolled in Medicare Advantage, versus 62.8 million enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B, according to KFF. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-7\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/UNH\/\">UnitedHealthcare<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> CEO Tim Noel said during a Jan. 27 earnings call that the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercehealthcare.com\/payers\/unitedhealth-shares-fall-premarket-company-misses-revenue-releases-2026-outlook\" target=\"_blank\">may lose<\/a> an estimated 1.3 million to 1.4 million Medicare Advantage members in 2026 because a competitive market is causing more enrollees to shop around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s going to have a real-world impact at some point, in terms of people who\u2019ve been dealing with these plans,\u201d said Philip Moeller, author of \u201cGet What\u2019s Yours for Medicare: Maximize Your Coverage, Minimize Your Costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, UnitedHealthcare or <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/HUM\/\">Humana<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> represented the largest Medicare Advantage insurers in more than half of counties, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/most-medicare-advantage-markets-are-dominated-by-one-or-two-insurers\" target=\"_blank\">2025 research by KFF<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While changes are looming, the Medicare Advantage market for 2026 is \u201cfairly robust,\u201d according to Tricia Neuman, executive director of the program on Medicare policy at KFF. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe average beneficiary has a choice of more than 30 Medicare Advantage plans, and virtually all plans offer extra benefits, such as vision, hearing and dental,\u201d Neuman said via email.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"medicare-advantage-open-enrollment\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Medicare Advantage open enrollment<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Medicare Advantage plans, otherwise known as Part C, are provided by private insurance companies and typically cover the same areas as original government-run Medicare Part A and B plans, and possibly Part D prescription coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Medicare Advantage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/basics\/get-started-with-medicare\/get-more-coverage\/joining-a-plan\" target=\"_blank\">open enrollment<\/a> is available for enrollees through March 31. <\/p>\n<p>During this time, current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/26\/health-insurers-tumble-after-trump-proposes-keeping-medicare-rates-flat.html\">Medicare Advantage<\/a> enrollees may switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or drop Medicare Advantage coverage and return to original Medicare \u2014 which typically includes Medicare Parts A and B hospital and medical insurance, as well as elective Part D prescription drug coverage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge people to spend some time researching, if they have Medicare Advantage,\u201d said Moeller.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108258815\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108258815\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000402254\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Medicare Advantage plans may have features that help attract enrollees. Some plans offer zero premiums, according to Moeller. Others<strong> <\/strong>provide supplemental benefits \u2014 such as dental, hearing and vision \u2014 that government-provided Medicare plans typically do not, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor people who have modest medical needs, Medicare Advantage can make good sense,\u201d Moeller said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-know-before-switching-to-original-medicare\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>What to know before switching to original Medicare<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Medicare Advantage plans can come with higher costs if you have a serious illness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople love Medicare Advantage when they\u2019re well, because it\u2019s cheaper for them,\u201d said Carolyn McClanahan, a physician and certified financial planner at Life Planning Partners in Jacksonville, Fla.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut as soon as they get a serious illness, they have to go through all this preauthorization and get turned down and challenge it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Medicare Advantage plans also often require patients to stay in network, rather than see their preferred doctor, said McClanahan, who is also a member of CNBC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/advisor-council\/\">Financial Advisor Council<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The current open enrollment period allows Medicare Advantage enrollees to switch to Medicare original. <\/p>\n<p>However, experts say prospective Medicare original enrollees need to be wary of potentially high out-of-pocket costs for Medigap private insurance plans, which are often needed to cover extra costs like copays, coinsurance or deductibles. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople need to do their homework and see that they\u2019re going to have a decent place to land,\u201d Moeller said. \u201cI would personally not have original Medicare without a [supplemental] plan.
