Contempt of Congress is a criminal offence that carries a possible prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The latest offer from the Clintons marks a reversal after the couple initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2870291f-f676-4229-b5dc-5463d811bed8\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">refused to appear<\/a> before the congressional committee investigating the government\u2019s handling of cases involving the late sex offender.<\/p>\n<p>The panel\u2019s investigation is separate from Department of Justice probes into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/0d590979-782d-4b85-bdd1-e7cce4a19a23\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">Epstein<\/a>, who was found hanging in his jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. The DoJ last week published millions of pieces of previously sealed evidence exposing Epstein\u2019s connections to rich and powerful political and business figures.<\/p>\n<p>The Clintons have acknowledged they were once friends with Epstein but denied any involvement in, or knowledge of, his crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans and Democrats on the House oversight committee last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/90445456-6943-4dc4-82d6-2c44e98941d9\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">voted<\/a> to hold the Clintons in contempt, in a move that opened the pair up to the risk of facing criminal charges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A vote in the full House of Representatives has been expected as soon as Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>If a majority of House members vote to hold the Clintons in contempt, it would be up to the DoJ to decide whether to bring criminal charges against the couple. <\/p>\n<p>Comer did not immediately agree to the Clintons\u2019 latest offer late on Monday, saying in a statement: \u201cThe Clintons\u2019 counsel has said they agree to terms, but those terms lack clarity yet again and they have provided no dates for their depositions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only reason they have said they agree to terms is because the House has moved forward with contempt,\u201d Comer added. \u201cI will clarify the terms they are agreeing to and then discuss next steps with my committee members.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Angel Ure\u00f1a, a spokesperson for the former president, on Monday accused Comer of failing to negotiate in \u201cgood faith\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey told you under oath what they know, but you don\u2019t care,\u201d Ure\u00f1a said in a post to X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the former President and former Secretary of State will be there,\u201d he added. \u201cThey look forward to setting a precedent that applies to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The House oversight committee has subpoenaed nearly a dozen people for depositions in its investigation, including Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell and several former US attorneys-general.
