Schaben | Los Angeles Times | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Travelers, be warned: Starting Feb. 1, you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/01\/tsa-will-charge-45-fee-for-air-passengers-without-real-ids.html\">may need to pay a fee of $45 or more<\/a> for going through airport security checkpoints <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/27\/as-real-id-deadline-approaches-there-are-workarounds-experts-say.html\">without a Real ID<\/a> or another acceptable travel document. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s not nothing,&#8221; John Breyault, vice president of public policy, telecommunications and fraud at the National Consumers League, a consumer advocacy group, said of the fee. &#8220;If you ever needed a reason to get a Real ID-compliant ID, now&#8217;s the time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/real-id\/real-id-faqs\" target=\"_blank\">Real ID<\/a>\u00a0card is an upgraded driver&#8217;s license or state identification card that officials say carries more stringent security and helps prevent fraudulent identification. It is state-issued and marked with a star. <\/p>\n<p>The federal government began requiring travelers to have a Real ID \u2014 or another document like a U.S. passport or passport card \u2014 to board a domestic flight, or enter certain federal facilities or nuclear power plants as of May 7, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>However, Feb. 1 marks the first time the Transportation Security Administration will impose a fee to enforce the rule. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Travelers ages 18 and older without an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/security-screening\/identification\" target=\"_blank\">acceptable travel document<\/a> will need to pay $45 to use an optional alternative identity verification system \u2014 called TSA ConfirmID \u2014 to fly. <\/p>\n<p>Roughly 6% of travelers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/news\/press\/releases\/2025\/12\/01\/tsa-introduces-new-45-fee-option-for-travelers-without-real-id\" target=\"_blank\">don&#8217;t have<\/a> a REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification, the TSA said in December when it announced the fee. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is really an enforcement mechanism,&#8221; said Sally French, a travel expert at NerdWallet. &#8220;It&#8217;s a real penalty for travelers who arrive unprepared.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"more-fees-for-longer-trips\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>More fees for longer trips <\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108142172\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Tanaonte | Istock | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Verification in the ConfirmID system is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/news\/press\/releases\/2025\/12\/01\/tsa-introduces-new-45-fee-option-for-travelers-without-real-id\" target=\"_blank\">valid for a 10-day travel period<\/a>, according to the TSA. <\/p>\n<p>Passing through a TSA checkpoint outside that 10-day period would require paying the TSA ConfirmID fee again, an agency spokesperson said in an email. In that scenario, a traveler on a longer trip could pay $90 total. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you go to Honolulu for two weeks, you may have to pay on the way back, too,&#8221; Breyault said. &#8220;If it wasn&#8217;t bad enough to be nickel-and-dimed by the airlines, now you&#8217;re getting nickel-and-dimed by the TSA.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"travelers-may-face-delays-missed-flights\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Travelers may face delays, missed flights<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Travelers without an acceptable ID can complete the ConfirmID process before arriving at the airport. <\/p>\n<p>They can visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/tsaconfirm-id\" target=\"_blank\">tsa.gov\/ConfirmID<\/a>, and then show their pay.gov receipt \u2014 a printout or screenshot \u2014 and any government-issued ID to the airport TSA officer, the agency said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108236505\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108236505\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000397306\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Travelers can also pay the fee on-site. But TSA recommends that travelers pay the fee online before travel. Failure to do so may result in delays and missed flights, the TSA said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is important that airline travelers plan ahead to ensure they have an acceptable form of ID to avoid these additional delays, as the process can take up to 30 minutes,&#8221; according to the TSA. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"low-income-travelers-families-face-largest-burden\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>Low-income travelers, families face largest burden<\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108142084\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>A Real ID sign at John F. The law set minimum security standards for state-issued driver&#8217;s licenses and ID cards in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. <\/p>\n<p>Breyault said he understands why the government would choose to impose a fee: It&#8217;s a good way to motivate people to comply with the Real ID requirement, he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, the burden will fall hardest on low- to moderate-income travelers and families with older children, he said. A family of four, for example, might pay more than $200 to fly,\u00a0assuming\u00a0the children are at least 18 years old\u00a0and the trip is longer, Breyault said. <\/p>\n<p>TSA doesn&#8217;t require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling within the U.S., even if they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/frequently-asked-questions\/my-child-traveling-alone-do-they-need-real-id-0\" target=\"_blank\">traveling alone<\/a>, the agency said. Each airline sets its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/faq\/do-minors-need-identification-travel\" target=\"_blank\">ID requirements<\/a>, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Breyault&#8217;s advice to consumers: &#8220;Well in advance of your trip, make sure to get a Real ID-compliant ID from your [department of motor vehicles], and if you don&#8217;t have it, make sure you have one of the other acceptable forms of ID.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Real ID costs vary by state. In New Jersey, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/mvc\/realid\/faq.html\" target=\"_blank\">costs<\/a> $35 to get a Real ID, for example.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>TSA estimates travelers will use the ConfirmID program about 10.6 million times over the next five years. <\/p>\n<p>The $45 fee will generate about $476 million in revenue, meant to offset administrative costs during that time, the agency said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/confirm.id-fee-development-report-as-of-12_02_25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report issued Dec. 2<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Adam Stahl, a senior official performing the duties of deputy TSA administrator, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/news\/press\/releases\/2026\/01\/15\/45-fee-option-for-air-travelers-without-real-id-begins-february-1\" target=\"_blank\">recent press release<\/a> that the fee would ensure &#8220;non-compliant travelers, not taxpayers, cover the cost of processing travelers without acceptable IDs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/alternative-identity-verification-fee-development-report-11_13_25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Nov. 13 report<\/a>, the TSA initially estimated travelers would need to pay an $18 fee \u2014 less than half the final rate \u2014 to cover administrative expenses. <\/p>\n<p>Asked for comment on the fees, a TSA spokesperson didn&#8217;t specify why the estimate changed in a matter of weeks. <\/p>\n<p>The TSA plans to reevaluate its fee structure every two years &#8220;to account for evolving conditions and rates of compliance,&#8221; the spokesperson said in an e-mail. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/31\/real-id-fee-tsa.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Travelers wait in a long security line at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California, May 7, 2025.&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":40707,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-40706","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-investing","cs-entry","cs-video-wrap"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/40706","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=40706"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/40706\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/40707"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=40706"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=40706"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=40706"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
