{"id":40460,"date":"2026-01-24T14:53:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T14:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=40460"},"modified":"2026-01-24T14:53:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T14:53:00","slug":"a-fear-of-becoming-obsolete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=40460","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;A fear of becoming obsolete&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108244680\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Fiordaliso | Moment | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Over the last few years, Emma Kobil, a trauma counselor in Denver, started noticing a new topic coming up with her patients: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had clients <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/20\/ai-impacting-labor-market-like-a-tsunami-as-layoff-fears-mount.html\">lose their jobs due to AI<\/a>, and it\u2019s something we\u2019ve processed in our sessions,\u201d Kobil said. Often, they express \u201cshock, disbelief and fear about navigating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/02\/26\/here-are-ways-to-get-by-without-a-paycheck-after-a-layoff.html\">changing career landscape<\/a> where their skills are no longer needed,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>Other therapists said the technology is also vexing their patients. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I hear most often is a fear of becoming obsolete,\u201d said Harvey Lieberman, a clinical psychologist in New York. \u201cPeople start questioning their judgment, their choices or their future.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>More than a third \u2014 or 38% \u2014 of workers said they worry AI will make some or all of their job duties outdated in the future, according to a July 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/pubs\/reports\/work-in-america\/2025\/2025-full-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a> by the American Psychological Association. <\/p>\n<p>These fears are not unfounded, said Rhiannon Batchelder, a career coach based in Denver. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome employees are being asked to create pitches for how AI can take over portions of their job,\u201d Batchelder said. \u201cAmong news of mass layoffs while CEO pay continues to rise, being replaced by technology just feels like another reason to lose hope in the possibility of a stable, fulfilling career.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>AI was a major factor leading to nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/21\/ai-job-cuts-amazon-microsoft-and-more-cite-ai-for-2025-layoffs.html\">55,000 layoffs in the U.S.<\/a>\u00a0in 2025, according to December data from consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Overall, around 1.2 million jobs were cut in the year. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a recent Massachusetts Institute of Technology study found that AI can already replace around 11% of the U.S. labor market. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/CRM\/\">Salesforce<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2018s\u00a0CEO, Marc Benioff, said 4,000 customer support workers had been let go because artificial intelligence was already doing 50% of the work at the company. What policy experts say about it<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/01\/best-financial-advisors.html\">CNBC\u2019s Financial Advisor 100: Best financial advisors, top firms ranked<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>People can suffer even more when it\u2019s unclear whether or not a layoff was due to AI, Lieberman said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are left in a gray zone that magnifies anxiety and self-doubt,\u201d Lieberman said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"you-are-so-much-more-than-your-work\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>\u2018You are so much more than your work\u2019 <\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Workers who know or think they lost their jobs to AI \u2014 or are grappling with the changes brought on by the technology \u2014 should first \u201cfeel the loss,\u201d Kobil said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur society is changing quickly,\u201d Kobil said. \u201cAllow yourself to grieve and comfort the parts of you that feel shocked, hopeless and afraid right now.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>For decades, studying computer science and learning to code was \u201cyour ticket to success,\u201d for a \u201clong, thriving career,\u201d Anderson said. That may no longer be the case. <\/p>\n<p>But the disruptive and uncertain moment can also be a chance for reflection, Anderson said. As an exercise, she recommends pausing any quest to pin down what will lead to a stable, lucrative career, \u201cbecause that might not be totally known now.\u201d Instead, she said, ask yourself: What do you want to do? <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo some inventory,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cMaybe at this time, take stock of who you are.\u201d Some people may decide to return to school or make a career change, she added. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote data-test=\"Pullquote\">\n<div class=\"Pullquote-pullquote\" style=\"border-top-color:#002f6c\">\n<div>\n<p>Our society is changing quickly. <\/p>\n<div class=\"Pullquote-sourceWrapper\">\n<p>Emma Kobil<\/p>\n<p>psychotherapist <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>As you ask yourself deeper questions about what you want, try to create some distance between you and your work, Kobil said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all experience huge change,\u201d Kobil said. \u201cWe all lose our young bodies, for example, but we are not our bodies, just like we are not our ability to write code or manage others.
