McClanahan is a member of CNBC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/advisor-council\/\">Financial Advisor Council<\/a>. \u201cPeople should be preemptive in preparing for this storm. Make sure you cover pipes, bring in plants or cover them, and stock up on supplies so you don\u2019t have to go out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what to know about the potential financial impacts and how to prepare. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"winter-storm-insurance-claims-average-15400\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Winter storm insurance claims average $15,400<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Winter storms can cause all sorts of physical damage to a home \u2014 anything from water damage caused by frozen, burst pipes to tree limbs that buckle under the weight of ice and wreck your roof. <\/p>\n<p>Luckily, those with homeowners insurance can generally recoup costs for damage from wind, snow, severe cold and freezing rain, said Karen Collins, vice president of property and environmental at the American Property and Casualty Insurance Association, a trade group. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108256502\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Shoppers carry snow shovels at a hardware store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US, on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026. <\/p>\n<p>Joe Lamberti | Bloomberg | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The average insurance loss claimed for water damage and freezing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iii.org\/fact-statistic\/facts-statistics-homeowners-and-renters-insurance\" target=\"_blank\">was $15,400 from 2019 to 2023<\/a>, according to the Insurance Information Institute. The average for wind and hail was about $14,700.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.statefarm.com\/frozen-pipes-not-so-nice-beat-winter-water-woes-before-they-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\">filed more than 20,000 claims<\/a> for frozen pipes and winter water damage from January 2024 through June 2025, totaling over $628 million in paid losses, according to State Farm, an insurer. The average claim payment exceeded $30,000, it said. <\/p>\n<p>Coverage for policyholders will depend on the fine print, however.<\/p>\n<p>For example, most homeowners\u2019 insurance covers \u201csudden and accidental\u201d water damage from a burst pipe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/news\/massachusetts-cold-snap-dont-let-frozen-pipes-become-your-next-insurance-claim\" target=\"_blank\">if the home was properly heated and wasn\u2019t left unoccupied<\/a>, according to the Massachusetts Division of Insurance. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108256287\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108256287\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000401682\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108256288-17691781251769178122-43644597207-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1769178124&w=750&h=422&vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Airlines cancel hundreds of flights as massive winter storm sweeps across the U.S.\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Experts recommend keeping your home heated to at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit to help keep pipes from freezing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe temperature inside the walls where the pipes are located is substantially colder than the walls themselves,\u201d according to the Insurance Information Institute. \u201cA temperature lower than 65 degrees will not keep the inside walls from freezing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That may not always be possible.<\/p>\n<p>During the so-called \u201cTexas Freeze\u201d in 2021, the costliest winter freeze event in U.S. history, a cold spell led to widespread power outages that prevented people from heating their homes, ultimately leading to sizable insured losses from water damage and burst pipes, said Collins.<\/p>\n<p>Homeowners can help by insulating interior and exterior pipes, opening the water faucets in sinks to allow a slow trickle of water and help prevent freezing, and identify the location of the main water shut-off valve in case a pipe bursts and they need to shut the water off, according to the American Property and Casualty Insurance Association.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"the-downside-of-stocking-up\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>The downside of stocking up<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Across the country, consumers are stockpiling groceries ahead of the extreme cold snap.<\/p>\n<p>While it may make sense to buy certain items as the weather worsens, stockpiling is rarely a good idea, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>In many cases, \u201cwidespread stockpiling ahead of a winter storm generally does not make sense,\u201d said Amir Mousavian, professor of supply chain management at the University of New England\u2019s College of Business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHouseholds should plan to have enough food and essential items to get through a few days in case travel is temporarily restricted, but there is little benefit to buying far beyond that,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Although there may be some savings benefits to buying in bulk, \u201cthere is also a real risk that households overbuy perishable items, leading to waste and lost money,\u201d Mousavian said.<\/p>\n<p>Often, this type of buying can backfire, he said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108256280\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Empty shelves at a Wegman\u2019s grocery store in Fairfax, VA on Thurs. Food prices \u2014 more than many other consumer goods \u2014 can be especially volatile due to supply-and-demand factors. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSudden surges in demand can strain supply chains,\u201d as witnessed during the Covid pandemic, Mousavian said.\u00a0\u201cModern supply chains are highly efficient, but they are not designed to absorb sharp, artificial spikes in demand, and those spikes can ultimately disadvantage consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"travel-disruptions-may-come-at-a-cost\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>Travel disruptions may come at a cost<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Airlines have already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/23\/winter-storm-fern-flight-cancellations.html\">canceled thousands of flights<\/a> as the winter storm looms. <\/p>\n<p>Several major airlines, including Delta and United, have already announced change\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/23\/winter-storm-fern-flight-cancellations.html\">fee waivers\u00a0<\/a>for travelers whose itineraries may be impacted by the impending winter storm. <\/p>\n<p>Taking advantage of those offers could be wise for some travelers, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you have a non-essential trip booked and you\u2019re able to reschedule it for a week or so from now, it may be a good idea to go ahead and change your flight, said Nick Ewen, senior editorial director at The Points Guy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108223521\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>A detailed view of a departures board showing delayed flights at Orlando International Airport (MCO) on November 09, 2025 in Orlando, Florida. <\/p>\n<p>Andrew Wevers | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>If an airline cancels your flight and you don\u2019t accept any rebooking options, then you could get a full refund, Ewen said. <\/p>\n<p>However, if you choose to cancel the flight yourself, you may only be entitled to a credit or voucher with the airline, unless you paid for a fully refundable flight. You\u2019d also lose out on a full refund if your original flight is canceled, Ewen said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve already proactively changed it, you\u2019re now on that new flight and that new itinerary, those new days, and then you\u2019d be subject to whatever policy is in place for that new ticket,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you have your airline\u2019s app downloaded and notifications turned on so you are informed about any changes to your flight, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108256175\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108256175\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000401663\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108256194-6ED1-WEX-012326-daneil.jpg?v=1769169087&w=750&h=422&vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Leonard: Power prices depend on what happens to the grid\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>For rental cars, most companies allow you to make changes or cancellations to your reservation up to the time of pickup, Ewen said. But that may not hold true if you booked through a third-party, such as a travel website or your credit card company, where you typically pay upfront.<\/p>\n<p>Hotels typically offer free cancellations up to 24 or 48 hours in advance of your stay, but it depends on your reservation. If you booked at a non-refundable rate, you may not be entitled to a full refund, but it\u2019s worth calling the hotel and explaining the situation, especially if it\u2019s weather-related, Ewen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a guarantee, but if you call [and] you explain the situation, you may be eligible for them to be a little bit more lenient,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Some credit cards offer trip interruption coverage, though, he said. If the hotel won\u2019t refund you, you may still be able to file a claim with your credit card company and get your money back as long as you paid with that card. <\/p>\n<p>A separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/10\/travel-insurance-coverage-gaps.html\">travel insurance policy<\/a> may offer additional protections, too. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"prepare-for-a-bigger-heating-bill\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline3\"\/>Prepare for a bigger heating bill<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Many households can expect higher heating costs as temperatures dip and more power is needed to keep homes warm.<\/p>\n<p>When cold weather hits, especially over a large swath of the country, there\u2019s often increased energy demand for space heating, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=67046\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Energy Information Administration<\/a>. That in turn raises demand for both electricity and natural gas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The spot price of natural gas has risen sharply over the last week to $8.15 per million British thermal units on Jan. 22 from $5.19 a week earlier. Higher wholesale natural gas prices generally contribute to higher wholesale electricity prices, according to the EIA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Consumers have already felt the pinch of higher electricity costs. Some of that is attributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/26\/ai-data-center-frenzy-is-pushing-up-your-electric-bill-heres-why.html\">the development of data centers<\/a>, which power artificial intelligence and place extra demand on the electric grid.<\/p>\n<p>According to the latest reading of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\">consumer price index<\/a>, electricity prices were up 6.7% in December from a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, for homes that use heating oil, the per-gallon cost was $3.66 as of Jan. 19, a drop from $3.93 a year earlier, according to the EIA.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney Fieldman, utility program director for the Southwest Energy Efficiency Program, offered these tips for saving energy \u2014 and therefore money \u2014 during the frigid weather on its way:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Optimize your thermostat.<\/strong> During the day, when there is still warming sunlight, setting your home\u2019s temperature a bit lower \u2014 to 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit \u2014 can keep you comfortable, as well as trim 10% off heating costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Block drafts.<\/strong> Use towels, blankets or even rolled-up clothes to seal gaps under doors and windows, and close off unused rooms by shutting doors and vents to keep heat where you need it. These air leaks around windows, doors and attics can waste up to 30% of heat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use natural heat and cut non-essentials<\/strong>. Open curtains on sunny sides of your house during the day and close them afterward to trap the heat in.
