That&#8217;s according to a CNBC translation of his remarks in Mandarin.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing&#8217;s last week had said that China &#8220;firmly opposed&#8221; agreements between Taiwan and countries that maintain diplomatic ties with Beijing, and urged the Washington to adhere to the &#8220;one-China principle.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>China considers democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory and Chinese President\u00a0Xi Jinping\u00a0regards its reunification with the mainland &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gwytb.gov.cn\/topone\/202312\/t20231231_12590901.htm\" target=\"_blank\">a historical inevitability<\/a>.&#8221; Taiwan rejects those claims.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwanese firms will make direct investments to the tune of $250 billion in the U.S. to build and expand tech operations including chips and AI. The Taiwanese government also promised to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/fact-sheets\/2026\/01\/fact-sheet-restoring-american-semiconductor-manufacturing-leadership\" target=\"_blank\">guarantee $250 billion<\/a>\u00a0in credit to its chip and technology companies to further expand their production capacity in the U.S. <\/p>\n<p>Taiwanese companies will also enjoy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/fact-sheets\/2026\/01\/fact-sheet-restoring-american-semiconductor-manufacturing-leadership\" target=\"_blank\">higher quotas for tariff-free imports\u00a0<\/a>of their chips into the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In return, Washington would lowered its levies on most goods from Taiwan to 15% from 20%, and waived tariffs on generic drugs and ingredients, aircraft components and natural resources unavailable domestically.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to bring 40% of Taiwan&#8217;s entire semiconductor supply chain to the U.S., Commerce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/15\/us-taiwan-chips-deal-china.html\">Secretary Howard Lutnick told CNBC<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world&#8217;s largest contract chipmaker, has already pledged to invest $165 billion into chip fabrication and processing facilities in the U.S., along with a research and development lab. The company is <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/D9nlMB5987\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly<\/a> planning to build 4 to 6 more plants, raising the total to more than 10. <\/p>\n<p>Beijing on Wednesday said that the U.S. was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.cn\/20260121\/35ff7d63b46649129dce49298d749993\/c.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;using Taiwan to contain China,&#8221;<\/a> claiming that labor costs for  TSMC&#8217;s U.S. factory were more than double those at its Taiwan factory. <\/p>\n<p>TSMC did not immediately respond to CNBC&#8217;s request for comments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108253421\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108253421\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000401054\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>DPP wants &#8220;TSMC to significantly increase its investment in the U.S., creating so-called high-paying jobs for Americans, which will only destroy the roots of the island&#8217;s industries,&#8221; Peng said.<\/p>\n<p>Experts have pointed out that the deal was unlikely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/19\/us-taiwan-chip-deal-silicon-shield-tsmc-trump-tapei-ai-semiconductor-supply-chain.html\">fully wean Washington off Taiwan&#8217;s<\/a> most advanced semiconductors anytime soon, as Taipei has stuck to its policy of keeping its most advanced technology at home. <\/p>\n<p>When asked about Lutnick&#8217;s statement, Taiwan&#8217;s vice premier Cheng Li-chiun said that the U.S. goal of achieving 40% domestic chip self-sufficiency as a national security priority does not depend on Taiwan alone, adding that the U.S. chip giants and other nations were also part of the plan. <\/p>\n<p>Taiwan dominates global chip production, with TSMC producing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6219318\/tsmc-taiwan-the-center-of-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">most of the world&#8217;s advanced chips<\/a>.
