{"id":40209,"date":"2026-01-16T21:53:44","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T21:53:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=40209"},"modified":"2026-01-16T21:53:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T21:53:44","slug":"republicans-want-to-expand-the-child-and-dependent-care-tax-credit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=40209","title":{"rendered":"Republicans want to expand the child and dependent care tax credit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108165907\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Halfpoint Images | Moment | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>As President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> embraces more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/14\/trump-republicans-economic-populism.html\">policy focused on affordability<\/a>, some lawmakers have pushed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/taxes\/\">expand tax credits<\/a> for families.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Study Committee this week <a href=\"https:\/\/rsc-pfluger.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rsc-chairman-pfluger-makes-push-second-reconciliation-bill-scott-jennings-show\" target=\"_blank\">released a framework<\/a> for a second budget bill, known as \u201cReconciliation 2.0,\u201d which outlines priorities like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/07\/trump-housing-affordability.html\">homeownership<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/15\/trump-congress-aca-subsidies-health-care.html\">health care<\/a>, energy prices and financial support for families.\u00a0Another reconciliation bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OdLHSI19ygk\" target=\"_blank\">has support<\/a> from House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Budget Committee Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/budget.house.gov\/press-release\/budget-chairman-calls-for-reconciliation-20\" target=\"_blank\">Jodey Arrington<\/a>, R-Texas., among others.  <\/p>\n<p>One proposal from the framework would expand access to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/credits-deductions\/individuals\/child-and-dependent-care-credit-information\" target=\"_blank\">child and dependent care tax credit<\/a>, or CDCTC, which partially offsets up to $6,000 of care expenses for two or more \u201cqualifying individuals\u201d \u2014 typically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/R44993#_Toc71550089\" target=\"_blank\">children under age 13<\/a> \u2014 when parents who file taxes jointly both work.      <\/p>\n<p>The CDCTC is often confused with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/01\/senate-republicans-big-beautiful-bill-child-tax-credit.html\">child tax credit<\/a>, or CTC, of up to $2,200 per child under age 17 for t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/credits-deductions\/individuals\/child-tax-credit\" target=\"_blank\">he 2025 tax year<\/a>. One key difference is the CTC doesn\u2019t require both parents who file taxes jointly to earn income.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The proposal comes during a mid-term election year as Republicans fight to defend a razor-thin majority in the House. Both parties are pushing messaging about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/24\/affordability-is-a-buzzword-right-now-these-charts-show-why.html\">affordability<\/a> as many Americans struggle with the cost of housing, food, electricity and health care.    <\/p>\n<p>Here are some key things to know about the child and dependent care tax credit, and how it could change under the Republican Study Committee\u2019s framework.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"who-benefits-from-the-cdctc\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Who benefits from the CDCTC <\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Only a small percentage of families claim the child and dependent care tax credit each year.   <\/p>\n<p>Roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/p4801.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">6.5 million returns<\/a> filed the form to claim the child and dependent care tax credit for tax year 2022, according to the latest IRS estimates. By comparison, nearly 37 million returns claimed the child tax credit or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/parents-check-eligibility-for-the-credit-for-other-dependents\" target=\"_blank\">credit for other dependents<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>Currently, about <a href=\"https:\/\/taxpolicycenter.org\/model-estimates\/T25-0250\" target=\"_blank\">13% of families with children<\/a> receive the child and dependent care tax credit, according to a 2025 Tax Policy Center analysis. That\u2019s compared to almost <a href=\"https:\/\/taxpolicycenter.org\/model-estimates\/T25-0253\" target=\"_blank\">90% of families with children<\/a> who receive the child tax credit. <\/p>\n<p>While Trump\u2019s \u201cbig beautiful bill\u201d expanded both tax credits, \u201cthere\u2019s still a lot of interest in further reforms,\u201d according to Garrett Watson, director of policy analysis at the Tax Foundation, a nonprofit think tank.   <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"how-the-cdctc-could-change\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>How the CDCTC could change<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The Republican framework aims to expand child and dependent care tax credit eligibility by removing the work requirement for both parents who file taxes jointly.<\/p>\n<p>If enacted, this would end the \u201cmarriage penalty\u201d to support stay-at-home parents and young families, according to the outline. However, it\u2019s unclear whether Reconciliation 2.0 will happen in 2026 amid competing legislative priorities, experts say.   <\/p>\n<p>Typically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/13\/some-newlyweds-may-face-a-higher-tax-bill-due-to-a-marriage-penalty-.html\">marriage penalties<\/a> create a higher tax burden for married couples filing jointly compared to their taxes owed when filing as single individuals. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108251636\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108251636\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000400665\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a marriage penalty like that,\u201d said Margot Crandall-Hollick, a principal research associate at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. \u201cIt is an elimination of a work requirement for moderate and higher-income married couples.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Currently, the child and dependent care tax credit is non-refundable, which means the benefit is limited by a return\u2019s total taxes owed.
