{"id":40161,"date":"2026-01-15T16:40:03","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T16:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=40161"},"modified":"2026-01-15T16:40:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T16:40:03","slug":"more-students-are-forgoing-four-year-college-new-reports-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=40161","title":{"rendered":"More students are forgoing four-year college, new reports show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108252404\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Peopleimages | Istock | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>For years, concerns over\u00a0rising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/college\/\">college costs<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/student-loans\/\">student loan debt<\/a> have been driving some high schoolers away from a four-year degree in favor of shorter, less expensive alternatives. <\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s clear that students are putting more emphasis on career training and post-college employment, as more opt for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/06\/02\/college-enrollment-may-have-reached-its-peak-experts-say.html\">two-year degree<\/a> or even shorter-term credentials.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0overall\u00a0rate of high school graduates choosing to enroll in community college and short-term credentialing programs is rising, according to a new report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/nscresearchcenter.org\/final-fall-enrollment-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Student Clearinghouse Research Center<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Enrollments in undergraduate certificate and associate degree programs both grew by about 2% in fall 2025, while enrollment in bachelor&#8217;s degree programs rose by less than 1%, the report found. Community colleges now enroll 752,000 students in undergraduate certificate programs \u2014 a 28% jump from just four years ago. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Overall, undergraduate enrollment growth was fueled by more students choosing to attend community college, the report found.<strong> <\/strong>&#8220;Community colleges led this year with a 3% increase, driven by continued rising interest in those shorter job-aligned certificate programs,&#8221; said Matthew Holsapple, the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center&#8217;s senior director of research.<\/p>\n<p>For one thing, community college is significantly less expensive. At two-year public schools,\u00a0tuition and fees averaged $4,150 for the 2025-2026 academic year, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/trends.collegeboard.org\/college-pricing\/figures-tables\/tuition-fees-room-board-time\" target=\"_blank\">College Board<\/a>. Alternatively, at four-year, in-state public colleges, tuition and fees were $11,950, and four-year private schools averaged $45,000.<\/p>\n<p>To help cover that cost, most students borrow to pay for college, which has led to ballooning student loan balances. That debt load has become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/14\/student-loans-default-tax-refunds-garnishment.html\">more difficult to manage<\/a>: Around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/14\/student-loans-default-tax-refunds-garnishment.html\">9 million<\/a> education loan holders are currently in a default status, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/protectborrowers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/For-Transmittal-01.07.2026-Coalition-Letter-Urging-Secretary-McMahon-to-Halt-Plan-to-Resume-AWG.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">recent estimate<\/a> from advocacy group Protect Borrowers.<\/p>\n<p>Among those with student debt, 77% say it is a &#8220;huge burden,&#8221; and 63% say the education they received wasn&#8217;t worth the impact student loan debt has had on their overall well-being, according to a study from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20251104672430\/en\/Skills-Crisis-Intensifies-as-AI-Reshapes-Workplace\" target=\"_blank\">EdAssist by Bright Horizons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Community colleges are accessible, affordable, and accredited, offering traditional transfer programs and relevant workforce training without the burden of excessive debt,&#8221; DeRionne Pollard, president and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges, said in an email.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"safety-premium-of-a-college-degree-is-shrinking\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>&#8216;Safety premium&#8217; of a college degree is shrinking<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/15\/ai-puts-the-squeeze-on-new-grads-looking-for-work.html\">The worst-case scenario<\/a> is taking on student debt and graduating without a job, college experts say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/23\/college-graduates-are-struggling-to-find-jobs-ai-is-partly-to-blame.html\">the job market for new grads<\/a> is shakier than it&#8217;s been in years. <\/p>\n<p>As a boom in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/ai-effect\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0is quickly reshaping the workforce, eliminating some entry-level jobs for college grads entirely, employers are projecting just a 1.6% increase in hiring for the Class of 2026 when compared to the Class of 2025, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/job-market\/trends-and-predictions\/hiring-flat-for-the-college-class-of-2026\" target=\"_blank\">National Association of Colleges and Employers<\/a>. Some experts say this is the start of an AI-driven, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/04\/white-collar-layoffs-ai-cost-cutting-tariffs.html\">white-collar recession<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A 2025 analysis by\u00a0Goldman Sachs\u00a0found that the &#8220;safety premium&#8221; of a college degree is shrinking. Although college graduates are still less likely to be unemployed than their non-degree counterparts, the advantage is smaller than it&#8217;s been in decades, the firm found.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of a two-year degree, vocational program or other types of certifications &#8220;are amplified in an environment of economic uncertainty \u2013 making community colleges not only a smart option but a necessary one for many students,&#8221; Pollard said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a\u00a0shortage of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/10\/05\/students-going-into-skilled-trades-are-finding-secure-jobs-good-pay.html\">skilled tradespeople<\/a> is boosting the number of job opportunities and pay in industries like nursing, manufacturing or construction, other research shows. Some in-demand trade jobs have average salaries well over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/career-advice\/finding-a-job\/highest-paying-trade-jobs\" target=\"_blank\">$100,000 a year<\/a>, according to job site Indeed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"workforce-pell-grants-create-new-opportunities\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Workforce Pell\u00a0Grants create &#8216;new opportunities&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Starting in July, there&#8217;s even more incentive to pursue short-term training programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/guide\/what-trumps-one-big-beautiful-bill-means-for-your-money\/\">big beautiful bill<\/a>,&#8221; which Congress passed last year,\u00a0students enrolling in workforce training programs at community colleges may be eligible for Pell Grants, a type of aid awarded solely based on financial need. The grants are worth up to $7,395 for the 2025-26 academic year.
