Many filers also make payments for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/investing\/\">investing income<\/a>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/15\/capital-gains-bracket.html\">year-end capital gains<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/16\/year-end-bonuses-rise-but-fewer-workers-are-getting-them-gusto-finds.html\">bonuses<\/a> if needed.  <\/p>\n<p>The January deadline is a &#8220;chance to catch up&#8221; on 2025 taxes, Tom O&#8217;Saben, director of tax content and government relations at the National Association of Tax Professionals, told CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>For 2025, the quarterly tax deadlines were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/14\/first-quarter-tax-deadline-2025.html\">April 15<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/15\/second-quarter-estimated-tax-deadline.html\">June 16<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/15\/third-quarter-estimated-tax-deadline-2025.html\">Sept. 15<\/a> and Jan. 15, 2026. These can easily be missed since they don&#8217;t match calendar quarters, experts say. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The Jan. 15 fourth-quarter estimated tax deadline comes as the IRS prepares to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/08\/irs-accepting-tax-returns.html\">start accepting individual returns<\/a> for 2025 on Jan. 26.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many workers could see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/13\/bigger-tax-refunds-2026.html\">bigger tax refunds<\/a> this season based on changes enacted by President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s &#8220;big beautiful bill,&#8221; which includes a bigger standard deduction, a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/10\/social-security-tax-bills.html\">$6,000 tax break for seniors<\/a>, plus tax breaks on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/10\/no-tax-on-tips-deduction-who-qualifies.html\">tip and overtime income<\/a>, among others. <\/p>\n<p>However, your refund depends on which provisions impact your situation, according to Garrett Watson, director of policy analysis at the Tax Foundation, a nonprofit think tank.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>For example, the tip or overtime deductions are &#8220;pretty large compared to some of these smaller items that might be impacting a larger group of folks,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p>Your refund or taxes owed also depends on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/14\/withhold-taxes-paycheck.html\">paycheck withholdings<\/a> \u2014 which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs-announces-no-changes-to-individual-information-returns-or-withholding-tables-for-2025-under-the-one-big-beautiful-bill-act\" target=\"_blank\">generally didn&#8217;t change<\/a> after Trump&#8217;s legislation \u2014 or other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/15\/third-quarter-estimated-tax-deadline-2025.html\">estimated tax payments<\/a> made throughout 2025.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-make-quarterly-tax-payments\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>How to make quarterly tax payments <\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>You can avoid an IRS underpayment penalty by following the &#8220;safe harbor&#8221; \u2014 paying at least 90% of your 2025 taxes or 100% of your 2024 taxes, whichever is smaller.<\/p>\n<p>That threshold jumps to 110% if your 2024 adjusted gross income was $150,000 or more, which you can find on line 11 of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/f1040.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Form 1040<\/a>\u00a0from your 2024 tax return.<\/p>\n<p>The safe harbor could prevent a penalty, but you can still owe additional 2025 taxes after filing your return, experts say. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108250491\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108250491\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000400386\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs-reminder-the-second-quarter-estimated-tax-payment-deadline-is-june-16\" target=\"_blank\">Electronic payments<\/a> are the &#8220;most secure, fastest and easiest way to pay,&#8221; according to the IRS. <\/p>\n<p>You can use your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/12\/irs-online-account.html\">IRS Online Account<\/a>, which has key information that could be helpful for the upcoming season. Other payment options include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/direct-pay-with-bank-account\" target=\"_blank\">Direct Pay<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/eftps-the-electronic-federal-tax-payment-system\" target=\"_blank\">Electronic Federal Tax Payment System<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While paper checks are still accepted, the IRS announced plans to transition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs-to-phase-out-paper-tax-refund-checks-starting-with-individual-taxpayers\" target=\"_blank\">electronic payments<\/a> in September, which includes refunds and payments made to the IRS.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Can people still submit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/f1040es.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the vouchers<\/a> with a paper check?
