The money will go to those who live in a ZIP code where the median income is less than $150,000, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20251217847942\/en\/Dalios-Double-Down-on-Connecticuts-Youth\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a> following the announcement. About 87% of Connecticut ZIP codes meet that criteria, a CNBC analysis of Census Bureau data found.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Earlier this month, the pilot program got a significant boost when\u00a0Michael Dell, founder and CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/DELL\/\">Dell Technologies<\/a>, and his wife, Susan announced a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/02\/michael-susan-dell-trump-accounts.html\">$6.25 billion pledge<\/a>\u00a0to help fund the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/22\/what-house-republican-big-beautiful-budget-bill-means-for-your-money.html\">savings accounts<\/a>\u00a0for children. That money is also geared toward\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.org\/blog-posts\/trump-accounts-are-here-now-lets-make-them-work\/\" target=\"_blank\">lower-income families<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Government investment accounts could help<a href=\"https:\/\/www.morningstar.com\/content\/dam\/marketing\/shared\/pdfs\/Research\/wp_Policy_Baby_Bonds_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> reduce the U.S. racial wealth gap<\/a>, according to a 2020 Morningstar analysis of so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/21\/a-baby-bond-bill-calls-for-giving-every-child-1000-at-birth.html\">\u201cbaby bonds,\u201d<\/a> an investment account funded with a small deposit at birth. These have been introduced by some states and local municipalities.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Currently, only a small percentage of families use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/06\/paying-for-college-gets-increasingly-difficult-as-tuition-rises.html\">529 college savings plans<\/a>, another tax-advantaged savings plan for children. Fewer than one-quarter of parents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/06\/paying-for-college-gets-increasingly-difficult-as-tuition-rises.html\">have an account for their children<\/a>, and 43% had never heard of the option, according to a July survey from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creditkarma.com\/about\/commentary\/gaps-in-529-plan-adoption-despite-high-parental-savings-rates-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\">Credit Karma<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-open-a-trump-account\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>How to open a Trump account<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Any legal guardian \u2014 including a parent, adult sibling or grandparent \u2014 can open a Trump account on behalf of a child age 18 or younger, as long as the child is a U.S. citizen.<\/p>\n<p>To open an account, the guardian must file <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-dft\/f4547--dft.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">IRS Form 4547<\/a>. The form can be filed separately or with your 2025 tax return. Beginning in mid-2026, you can also make open an account online at\u00a0trumpaccounts.gov.<\/p>\n<p>Once an account is established, children born in 2025 through 2028 may receive a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/08\/how-trump-accounts-work.html\">one-time $1,000<\/a> contribution from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department of the Treasury<\/a>. There are no income requirements, and everyone is eligible for the Treasury\u2019s seed money.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"more-from-etf-strategist\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">More from ETF Strategist:<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at other stories offering insight on ETFs for investors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Children 10 or under and\u00a0born before Jan. 1, 2025 \u2014 who wouldn\u2019t qualify for the $1,000 initial deposit from the government \u2014 may also be able to receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/02\/trump-accounts-claim-money.html\">$250<\/a>\u00a0from the Dell family grant deposited to their Trump account if they live in a ZIP code where the median income is $150,000 or less.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>CNBC analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data for median incomes and population ages for each U.S. ZIP code. Only about 3% of ZIP codes have median incomes above $150,000.<\/p>\n<p>With the additional funds, some 25 million American children could benefit, according to Invest America, a nonprofit advocacy group partnered with the Dells.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"trump-account-investments\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>Trump account investments<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>While the new trumpaccounts.gov site shows a mock-up of \u201cKatie\u2019s Trump Account,\u201d with holdings including 1.1 shares of <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-29\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NVDA\/\">Nvidia<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> and 0.2 shares of <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-30\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/TSLA\/\">Tesla<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, among others, an \u201canswers\u201d section of the site notes that \u201cfunds will be invested in a diversified portfolio of low-cost index funds.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The investment options for Trump accounts are more restrictive than some other tax-advantaged accounts. For example, assets are limited to \u201cbroad U.S. equity index funds,\u201d such as mutual or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/etf-strategist\/\">exchange-traded funds<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump account investments must track a \u201cqualified index,\u201d which has not been defined, and annual fees and expenses can\u2019t exceed 0.1%, according to the Treasury.
