Although it&#8217;s not the rate consumers pay, the Fed&#8217;s moves still influence the rates individual borrowers pay on many types of consumer loans.<\/p>\n<p>That said, for most Americans, a Fed rate cut does not guarantee lower borrowing costs. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"a-mixed-bag-for-consumers\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>A mixed bag for consumers<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;Anyone who is exposed to variable rate debt, which is benchmarked off of prime, could see a reduction in their borrowing costs \u2014 but for the mortgage market and any other longer-term rates, we could even see an increase,&#8221; said Brett House, economics professor at Columbia Business School. &#8220;It depends on the duration of the product and the product itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Short-term rates are more closely pegged to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/faqs\/credit_12846.htm\" target=\"_blank\">prime rate<\/a>, which is the rate that banks charge their most creditworthy customers \u2014 typically 3 percentage points above the federal funds rate. Longer-term rates are also influenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000793\">inflation<\/a> and other economic factors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108231215\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Mr Vito | E+ | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Since most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/credit-cards\/\">credit cards<\/a>\u00a0have a short-term, variable rate, there&#8217;s a direct connection to the Fed&#8217;s benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>When the Fed lowers rates, the prime rate comes down, too, and the interest rate on your credit card debt is likely to adjust within a billing cycle or two. Still, credit card APRs will only ease off extremely high levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To go from 20% to 18%, that doesn&#8217;t change your situation,&#8221; said Stephen Kates, a financial analyst at Bankrate. &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t put you in a position where that balance is meaningfully easier to manage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/auto-loans\/\">Auto loan rates<\/a>\u00a0and federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/student-loans\/\">student loans<\/a> are fixed for the life of the loan and won&#8217;t adjust with the Fed&#8217;s move, although anyone shopping for a car or taking on education debt in the year ahead could benefit if borrowing costs come down on new loans. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Longer-term loans, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/mortgages\/\">mortgages<\/a>, make up the largest share of consumer debt, but those loans are even less impacted by the central bank. Both 15- and 30-year mortgage rates are more closely tied to Treasury yields and the economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108236833\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108236833\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000397372\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108236834-17648748211764874818-42823805051-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1764874820&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"U.S. 10-year yield won't head durably down if Hassett becomes Fed chair, says Wolfe's Tobin Marcus\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;The bond market doesn&#8217;t believe that inflation is conquered,&#8221; said Professor House, noting that lack of faith has kept mortgage rates in the same narrow range. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also, since most people have fixed-rate mortgages, their rate won&#8217;t change unless they refinance or sell their current home and buy another property.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other home loans are more influenced by the Fed&#8217;s moves.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/04\/29\/how-to-know-if-the-popular-adjustable-rate-mortgage-is-right-for-you.html\">Adjustable-rate mortgages<\/a>, or ARMs,\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/02\/22\/owners-clueless-about-home-equity-study.html\">home equity lines of credit<\/a>, or HELOCs,\u00a0are pegged to the prime rate.
