Boneparth is also a member of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/advisor-council\/\">CNBC Financial Advisor Council<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"more-from-financial-advisor-playbook\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">More from Financial Advisor Playbook:<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at other stories affecting the financial advisor business.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>U.S. employers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.challengergray.com\/blog\/challenger-report-71321-job-cuts-on-restructurings-closings-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\">have cut<\/a> 1.17 million jobs through November of this year, with corporate restructuring, artificial intelligence and tariffs to blame, consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/04\/layoff-announcements-this-year-top-1point1-million-the-most-since-2020-when-pandemic-hit-challenger-says.html\">reported<\/a> Thursday. That number is the highest level since 2020, during the Covid pandemic. <\/p>\n<p>Payroll processing firm ADP also found this week that the labor market slowdown intensified in November, with private companies cutting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/03\/adp-jobs-report-november-2025-private-payrolls-unexpectedly-fell-by-32000-.html\">32,000 workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what workers need to know about unemployment benefits. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"documents-youll-need-to-file-for-unemployment\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Documents you\u2019ll need to file for unemployment<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Before filing for unemployment benefits, you\u2019ll want to gather the following information, said Michele Evermore, senior fellow at the National Academy of Social Insurance: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Details of your pay over the last 18 months<\/li>\n<li>Names of previous employers during that period and their addresses<\/li>\n<li>Your Social Security number, <\/li>\n<li>Your state-issued identification, such as a driver\u2019s license<\/li>\n<li>Any documentation from your last employer, including information related to your termination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"apply-in-the-state-where-you-worked\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Apply in the state where you worked <\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>If you live in one state and work in another, you\u2019ll want to apply for the aid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/general\/topic\/unemployment-insurance#:~:text=To%20receive%20unemployment%20insurance%20benefits,receive%20your%20first%20benefit%20check.\" target=\"_blank\">in the state where you worked<\/a>, experts say. <\/p>\n<p>On a DOL-sponsored website, you can find\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.careeronestop.org\/LocalHelp\/UnemploymentBenefits\/find-unemployment-benefits.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">the contact information for state unemployment agencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>State agencies should pay benefits within three weeks of your application, but delays have become more common since the pandemic, Evermore said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s probably going to get worse as layoffs increase,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"maximum-benefits-vary-by-state\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>Maximum benefits vary by state <\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Maximum unemployment benefit amounts vary by state. For example, California\u2019s maximum weekly benefit is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edd.ca.gov\/en\/unemployment\/UI-Calculator\/\" target=\"_blank\">$450<\/a>; in Florida, the cap is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridajobs.org\/Reemployment-Assistance-Service-Center\/reemployment-assistance\/claimants\/claimant-faqs-(new)\" target=\"_blank\">$275<\/a>, Evermore said. Recently, the maximum weekly benefit in New York rose to <a href=\"https:\/\/dol.ny.gov\/mbr\" target=\"_blank\">$869<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"standard-benefit-timeline-is-26-weeks-but-not-always\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline3\"\/>Standard benefit timeline is 26 weeks, but not always <\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>In most states, claimants can get unemployment benefits for 26 weeks, Evermore said \u2014 although it\u2019s less in some states. In Florida, for example, the benefits last for just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/economy\/how-many-weeks-of-unemployment-compensation-are-available\" target=\"_blank\">12 weeks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"unemployment-benefits-are-subject-to-taxes\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline4\"\/>Unemployment benefits are subject to taxes<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Unemployment benefits are subject to federal taxes, and many states tax them, too.
