{"id":38823,"date":"2025-12-03T18:38:46","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T18:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=38823"},"modified":"2025-12-03T18:38:46","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T18:38:46","slug":"what-medicare-prescription-drug-cost-changes-mean-for-beneficiaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=38823","title":{"rendered":"What Medicare prescription drug cost changes mean for beneficiaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"SpecialReportArticle-ArticleBody-6\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"SpecialReportArticle-articleBody-6-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108226246\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Catherine Delahaye | Digitalvision | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Medicare beneficiaries have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/plan-compare\" target=\"_blank\">until Dec. 7<\/a> to take advantage of an annual open enrollment period.<\/p>\n<p>For retirees who rely on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/14\/why-americans-pay-so-much-more-for-prescription-drugs-.html\">prescription drugs<\/a>, experts say it\u2019s a good time to evaluate the cost of those treatments for next year. <\/p>\n<p>Medicare\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/19\/medicare-open-enrollment.html\">open enrollment<\/a> lets beneficiaries change their private Medicare Advantage plans, which may include drug coverage, or change Medicare Part D prescription plans if they have original Medicare, including Parts A and B for hospital and medical insurance. Beneficiaries may also switch from Medicare Original to Medicare Advantage or vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>While select opportunities to change Medicare coverage may come up at other times of the year, this is when beneficiaries \u201chave the most flexibility in the entire year,\u201d according to Ryan Ramsey, associate director at the National Council on Aging, a national advocacy organization for older adults.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"more-from-fixed-income-strategies\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">More from Fixed Income Strategies:<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><em>Stories for investors who are retired or are approaching retirement, and are interested in creating and managing a steady stream of income:<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>For example, during a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/24\/medicare-advantage-open-enrollment-what-to-know-about-selecting-health-plans.html\">Medicare Advantage open enrollment<\/a> period, which runs from Jan. 1 through March 31, Medicare Advantage beneficiaries may opt to switch to another Advantage plan or to Medicare original coverage. However, existing Medicare original beneficiaries who have Part D prescription plans will not be eligible to change that drug coverage at that time, according to Ramsey.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 55 million individuals are enrolled in either standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug or Advantage plans, according to KFF, a non-partisan health policy, research, polling and news organization. <\/p>\n<p>Because prescriptions can represent a significant portion of retirees\u2019 budgets, picking the right coverage is important. A 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/pri\/topics\/health\/prescription-drugs\/prescription-medication-costs-medicare\" target=\"_blank\">AARP survey<\/a> found 78% of adults ages 65 and over described prescription drugs as \u201ctoo expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2026, certain changes may help curb Medicare beneficiaries\u2019 prescription drug spending. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"changes-to-premium-costs-and-plans\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Changes to premium costs and plans<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Average prescription drug plan and Medicare Advantage plan premiums are generally going down in 2026, which is a \u201cnice change to see,\u201d according to Ramsey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn general, [Part D] premiums have not gone up and may even be lower in some areas,\u201d said Alex Cottrill, senior policy analyst at the program on Medicare policy at KFF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFolks shouldn\u2019t necessarily be on the lookout for a big increase in costs,\u201d Cottrill said. \u201cBut we are seeing that the number of plan offerings in general has gone down.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Private Medicare Advantage plans, the vast majority of which offer prescription drug coverage, have not had as large a decrease in available plan options, he said.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, Medicare beneficiaries may face other rising costs in 2026. Standard Medicare Part B premiums are poised to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/17\/standard-medicare-part-b-premium-2026.html\">jump 9.7%<\/a> next year, the second-highest increase in the program\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"new-out-of-pocket-cap-and-limits-on-drug-costs\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>New out-of-pocket cap and limits on drug costs<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>In 2026, the limit on out-of-pocket prescription drug spending will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/health-drug-plans\/part-d\/basics\/costs\" target=\"_blank\">increase to $2,100<\/a>, up from $2,000 in 2025.<strong> <\/strong>Once beneficiaries pay a plan\u2019s full deductible, they will owe 25% of the cost of coinsurance until the $2,100 cap is reached. After that, the Medicare plan will pay for 100% of prescription drug costs for the rest of the year. <\/p>\n<p>That cap applies to beneficiaries who have either Medicare original or Medicare Advantage coverage, according to Cottrill. However, it does not apply to treatments that would not typically fall under Medicare Part D coverage, such as Medicare Part B medical insurance, he said. The out-of-pocket cap also only applies to prescription drugs covered by a plan. <\/p>\n<p>In 2026, prices will go into effect for the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/08\/15\/medicare-releases-prices-for-first-10-drugs-subject-to-negotiations.html\">10 prescription medications<\/a> subject to cost negotiations between Medicare and drug companies. <\/p>\n<p>Plans are required to cover the selected drugs, Cottrill said; however, cost sharing will vary from plan to plan. \u201cComparison shopping still matters,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration estimated the new prices would lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/08\/15\/medicare-releases-prices-for-first-10-drugs-subject-to-negotiations.html\">$1.5 billion<\/a> in out-of-pocket savings for beneficiaries in 2026.
