{"id":38722,"date":"2025-12-01T13:37:34","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T13:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=38722"},"modified":"2025-12-01T13:37:34","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T13:37:34","slug":"how-to-use-your-flexible-spending-account-balance-before-it-expires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=38722","title":{"rendered":"How to use your flexible spending account balance before it expires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"SpecialReportArticle-ArticleBody-6\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"SpecialReportArticle-articleBody-6-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108233488\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Sturti | E+ | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Some workers with health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/19\/hsas-and-fsas-can-be-free-money-says-benefits-expert.html\">flexible spending accounts<\/a> may be on the verge of giving their employers an unintentional gift this holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the share of employees who miss the typical Dec. 31 deadline to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/16\/make-the-most-of-health-care-expenses-before-end-of-year.html\">spend their FSA money<\/a> and end up forfeiting it to their companies is between 40% and 50%, according to ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebri.org\/health\/hsa-database\/content\/updates-from-ebri-s-flexible-spending-account-database\" target=\"_blank\">research from the Employee Benefit Research Institute<\/a>, which began tracking FSA data in 2019. Although some companies give account holders an extension, most \u2014 about two-thirds \u2014 employ a use-it-or-lose-it rule.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People tell us one of the main reasons they forfeit FSA funds is because they aren&#8217;t aware that they have a deadline in the first place, or they don&#8217;t know how much they have left in their account,&#8221; said Rachel Rouleau, chief compliance officer for Health E-Commerce, parent company of FSA Store.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"dont-confuse-your-fsa-with-an-hsa\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Don&#8217;t confuse your FSA with an HSA<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The total U.S. health-care expenditure was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/data-research\/statistics-trends-and-reports\/national-health-expenditure-data\/nhe-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\">$4.9 trillion in 2023<\/a>, according to the most recent data available from the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services. Out-of-pocket spending that year grew 7.2% to $505.7 billion.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/16\/make-the-most-of-health-care-expenses-before-end-of-year.html\">health-care costs<\/a> have risen over the years \u2014 at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthsystemtracker.org\/brief\/how-does-medical-inflation-compare-to-inflation-in-the-rest-of-the-economy\/#Cumulative%20percent%20change%20in%20Consumer%20Price%20Index%20for%20All%20Urban%20Consumers%20(CPI-U)%20for%20medical%20care%20and%20for%20all%20goods%20and%20services,%20January%202000%20-%20June%202024\" target=\"_blank\">rate outpacing overall inflation<\/a> \u2014 FSAs have grown in popularity as a way for workers to set aside pretax money to cover health expenses. Nearly three-quarters \u2014 72% \u2014 of state and local government workers and 47% of private-sector workers had access to a health FSA in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ebs\/factsheets\/flexible-benefits-in-the-workplace.htm\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>. That compares with 60% and 40% in 2015, respectively. <\/p>\n<p>The contribution limit for health FSAs this year is $3,300 and in 2026 will be $3,400.<\/p>\n<p>FSAs are different from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/20\/what-to-know-if-youre-nearing-age-65-with-an-hsa.html\">health savings accounts<\/a>, or HSAs, which some people use in conjunction with high-deductible health plans. While both let you set aside pretax money for health care expenses, HSAs do not come with a use-it-or-lose-it provision \u2014 you can leave the money in the account as long as you want.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"more-from-financial-advisor-playbook\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">More from Financial Advisor Playbook:<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Here&#8217;s a look at other stories affecting the financial advisor business.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;People confuse FSAs with HSAs by thinking they are the same thing,&#8221; said certified financial planner Bill Shafransky, senior wealth advisor for Moneco Advisors in New Canaan, Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p>Of the FSA owners who forfeited money in 2023, the average amount was $436, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"use-remaining-fsa-funds-to-your-advantage\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Use remaining FSA funds &#8216;to your advantage&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>If you have an FSA, first check whether your company&#8217;s plan year ends on Dec. 31 \u2014 most do, but there are some employers whose plan year ends in a different month. <\/p>\n<p>Also, see if your employer offers either a grace period of up to 2.5 extra months to spend your balance on eligible new expenses or allows you to carry over a set amount \u2014 up to $660 this year. They cannot provide both options.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, many employers give you extra time \u2014 typically three months after the deadline \u2014 to submit receipts for qualifying expenses that occurred during the previous plan year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>For workers without either a grace period or carryover, not all hope is lost, Shafransky said. &#8220;Coming into the year-end, use eligible expenses to your advantage,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the average household spends $1,600 a year on FSA-eligible products, according to FSA Store estimates, Rouleau said.<\/p>\n<p>The list of covered items is lengthy and includes things like cold and allergy medications, acne patches and cleansers, over-the-counter pain medications and menstrual care products, she said. There are also health technology products, including light therapy devices for pain or acne treatment and migraine relief masks.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s in addition to doctor and dentist appointments, prescription drugs and other health-care services such as acupuncture and addiction treatment.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t know if you have money remaining in your FSA or what your company&#8217;s rules are, there are ways to find out.<\/p>\n<p>Most plans offer an online portal where you can review your balance, submit claims and check deadlines, Rouleau said.
