The overall belt-tightening was largely due to a higher cost of living and financial constraints, Deloitte found.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The Black Friday-Cyber Monday week is typically the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, although many shoppers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/12\/holiday-shopping-early-inflation-trump-tariffs.html\">started earlier<\/a> this year to make the most of sales events like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/prime-day-sales.html\">Amazon Prime Day<\/a> and to get ahead of tariff-induced price increases. <\/p>\n<p>Overall, shoppers are trying to spread out their spending to be &#8220;more strategic,&#8221; according to Stephanie Carls, a retail insights expert at RetailMeNot. That also includes stacking savings, such as pairing sales events with promo codes or coupons as well as cash-back offers. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are using every tool that they can to protect those budgets,&#8221; Carls said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108226499\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108226499\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000395704\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/04\/why-on-time-debt-payments-may-not-boost-your-credit-score.html\">Debt issues<\/a>\u00a0have been affecting a growing number of consumers across all income levels, several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/28\/-debt-struggles-hit-consumers-at-all-income-levels-heres-why.html\">studies show<\/a>. For many Americans, wage gains have largely not kept pace with stubborn\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000793\">inflation<\/a>, which makes it harder to make ends meet in a typical month. <\/p>\n<p>Still, shoppers tend to rely on Thanksgiving week promotions for their gift buying: About 60% have already put items in their carts to purchase over the holiday shopping weekend, but 38% say they plan to only buy the items that are at least 50% off, Deloitte found.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Value continues to be the centerpiece of the holiday season,&#8221; Brian McCarthy<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/profiles\/brian-mccarthy.html\" target=\"_blank\">,<\/a> principal and retail strategy leader at Deloitte Consulting, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Other reports also show a potential pullback this year. According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lendingtree.com\/credit-cards\/study\/black-friday-shopping\/\" target=\"_blank\">LendingTree<\/a> report, 64% of Americans plan to shop on Black Friday, but 39% said higher prices will lead them to spend less this year.<\/p>\n<p>One &#8220;notable headwind,&#8221; according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/media-center\/press-releases\/nrf-expects-holiday-sales-to-surpass-1-trillion-for-the-first-time-in-2025\" target=\"_blank\">National Retail Federation<\/a>, was\u00a0the longest federal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/government-shutdown\/\">government shutdown<\/a>\u00a0in U.S. history, which lasted 43 days. <\/p>\n<p>Americans were already facing mounting challenges in an increasingly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/23\/k-shaped-spending-sectors-showing-bifurcation.html\">bifurcated consumer economy<\/a>.
