AI is partly to blame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108228839\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108228839\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000396346\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Even as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2008\/07\/13\/us-economy.html\">U.S. economy<\/a> adds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/20\/jobs-report-september-2025.html\">jobs<\/a>, there are fewer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000835\">employment <\/a>prospects\u00a0for college graduates just starting out, as those armed with a newly minted diploma are facing one of the toughest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/jobs\/\">job markets<\/a>\u00a0in a decade, studies show.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right now is a really difficult time to find a job,&#8221; Cory Stahle, senior economist at Indeed Hiring Lab, told CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>By many measures, the labor market is still relatively strong. The U.S. economy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/20\/jobs-report-september-2025.html\">added more jobs than expected<\/a> in September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, the overall unemployment rate edged up to\u00a04.4%, and for younger workers, ages 16 to 24, unemployment was 10.4% in September. <\/p>\n<p>The current job market &#8220;is an enormous challenge for members of Gen Z who are just now entering the labor force,&#8221; a report published this week by <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.roxhillmedia.com\/production\/email\/attachment\/1770001_1780000\/3b5ad7d0f0dcd3845ad3753d419cfcce9f9607c5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Oxford Economics<\/a> says.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rising youth unemployment could be an &#8220;early indicator that the economy is slowing down or maybe even heading towards a recession,&#8221; said Anders Humlum, assistant professor of economics at the University of Chicago. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/college\/\">college degree<\/a>\u00a0is often considered the best pathway to a well-paying job,\u00a0but that may no longer be as true as it once was, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the first time in modern history, a bachelor&#8217;s degree is no longer a reliable path to professional employment,&#8221; Gad Levanon, chief economist at the Burning Glass Institute, told CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>An analysis by\u00a0Goldman Sachs\u00a0found that the &#8220;safety premium&#8221; of a college degree is shrinking. Although college graduates are still less likely to be unemployed than their non-degree counterparts, the advantage is smaller than it&#8217;s been in decades. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"job-market-worsens-for-recent-grads\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Job market worsens for recent grads<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>For recent college graduates, the cracks are starting to show. <\/p>\n<p>Some large employers have said they&#8217;re\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/08\/how-ai-is-poised-to-disrupt-the-job-market.html\">replacing entry-level workers with artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0in order to streamline operations and cut costs. Concerns about the economy, persistent inflation and a slowdown in consumer spending are also likely contributors to an erosion of entry-level opportunities,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/04\/white-collar-layoffs-ai-cost-cutting-tariffs.html\">other research shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although members of the Class of 2025 submitted more job applications than did their 2024 counterparts \u2014 10 and six, respectively \u2014 they received fewer job offers on average than did the previous class, with mean numbers of .78 and .83, respectively, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/job-market\/trends-and-predictions\/facing-a-tough-job-market-class-of-2025-responded-accordingly\" target=\"_blank\">National Association of Colleges and Employers<\/a> found. NACE&#8217;s study, conducted April 1-May 30, 2025, surveyed 1,479 graduating seniors.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cengagegroup.com\/edtech-research\/employability-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> by education technology company Cengage Group, in its  survey conducted in June and July 2025 only 30% of 2025 graduates said they had secured a full-time job in their field and only 41% of the Class of 2024 said they had done so.
