{"id":37488,"date":"2025-10-30T15:19:05","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T15:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=37488"},"modified":"2025-10-30T15:19:05","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T15:19:05","slug":"democrats-propose-200-va-social-security-benefits-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=37488","title":{"rendered":"Democrats propose $200 VA, Social Security benefits boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108131201\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>A Social Security Administration office in Washington, D.C., March 26, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Saul Loeb | Afp | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>To help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/24\/social-security-cola-2026-benefits-increase.html\">Social Security<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Affairs<\/a> beneficiaries cope with higher prices, a group of Democratic senators are proposing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/23\/social-security-cola-for-2026-some-retirees-wish-it-would-be-more.html\">increase benefits<\/a> by $200 per month for six months.<\/p>\n<p>The bill \u2014 called the Social Security Emergency Inflation Relief Act \u2014 is backed by Democratic Senators including Mark Kelly of Arizona, Alex Padilla of California, Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, Angela Alsobrooks and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Tina Smith of Minnesota, Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer of New York, Ron Wyden of Oregon and Peter Welch of Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>The leaders plan to introduce the proposal on Thursday morning, according to a Warren spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>The extra $200-per-month emergency increase would boost benefit payments through July 2026, according to the senators&#8217; proposal. The benefit boost would apply to individuals receiving benefits from Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, railroad retirement, veteran disability compensation and veteran pensions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The proposal follows the Social Security Administration&#8217;s Friday announcement of a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for 2026. The annual adjustment is intended to help Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits maintain their buying power.<\/p>\n<p>The 2.8% increase will add about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/news\/en\/press\/releases\/2025-10-24.html\" target=\"_blank\">$56 per month<\/a> to Social Security retirement benefits, on average, starting in January, according to the Social Security Administration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"an-emergency-lifeline-for-seniors\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>An &#8217;emergency lifeline for seniors&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The adjustment for 2026 is &#8220;not enough&#8221; for seniors who face &#8220;skyrocketing&#8221; costs when it comes to groceries, health care and utilities, Warren wrote in an Oct. 24 <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenWarren\/status\/1981735978751369341\" target=\"_blank\">social media post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Warren called the bill to provide an extra $200 per month to beneficiaries an &#8220;emergency lifeline for seniors struggling to afford Trump&#8217;s tariffs and rising inflation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Schumer, in a separate statement, said the Social Security COLA is &#8220;simply not reflective of the current reality&#8221; for seniors as they see their bank accounts shrinking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108186538\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108186538\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000385789\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>On Monday, another group of Democratic lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blumenthal.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press\/release\/blumenthal-gillibrand-gallego-budzinski-introduce-bicameral-bill-expanding-social-security-benefits-for-seniors\" target=\"_blank\">proposed a bill<\/a>, the Boosting Benefits and COLAs for Seniors Act, that calls for basing the annual cost-of-living adjustment on the CPI-E, or Consumer Price Index for the Elderly, a research index that tracks the spending patterns of Americans ages 62 and over.<\/p>\n<p>Social Security&#8217;s annual COLA adjustments are currently based on a subset of the consumer price index \u2014 the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W, which tracks price changes for goods and services bought by certain workers.<\/p>\n<p>Changing the Social Security COLA to be indexed to the CPI-E would increase the future adjustments by about 0.2 percentage points, Social Security&#8217;s chief actuary has estimated, according to research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bipartisanpolicy.org\/explainer\/cost-of-living-adjustment\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bipartisan Policy Center<\/a>. That change would also increase the program&#8217;s long-term shortfall by an estimated 11%, according to the estimate.<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear how much the senators&#8217; proposal to add $200 per month to benefits would cost or whether it would affect Social Security&#8217;s trust fund depletion dates.
