However this situation has cast a shadow over our relationship, therefore a prompt resolution is essential,\u201d European trade commissioner Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d told a press conference in Strasbourg after talks with Chinese officials.<\/p>\n<p>China, in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/755d7413-c71a-4a6e-bbe9-2b821032bdee\" data-trackable=\"link\">US export controls<\/a>, has forced overseas companies to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c4b2c5d9-c82f-401e-b763-bc9581019cb7\" data-trackable=\"link\">obtain licences<\/a> to import many rare earths. It recently tightened measures, with foreign owned businesses forced to ask permission to export some products with even a small amount of China-sourced materials. <\/p>\n<p>\u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d spoke for two hours to Chinese commerce minister Wang Wentao on Tuesday and said Wang <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MarosSefcovic\/status\/1980664594231357682\" data-trackable=\"link\">would visit Brussels<\/a> to discuss the situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d welcomed the \u201cconstructive discussion, during which we agreed to intensify contacts at all levels\u201d, he said the \u201cunjustified and harmful\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009measures undermine our bilateral relations and run counter to our intentions to stabilise and make our trade more reliable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said that of about 2,000 applications for licences from priority cases, only half had been approved by China in a system set up in July.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The delays were having a \u201cnegative impact on production in our facilities\u201d, especially for carmakers and machinery manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>The two also discussed the situation at Dutch chipmaker Nexperia. The Netherlands governmen<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/db019842-01a9-4488-a6a0-45d0e102536b\" data-trackable=\"link\">t seized control<\/a> of the company this month and ousted its Chinese chief executive and owner. In response Beijing has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/20a41258-48ff-4d18-bf04-e45c8238229e\" data-trackable=\"link\"> blocked exports of Nexperia chips<\/a> assembled in China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d said it was a \u201cserious bilateral matter which can have both European and global repercussions\u201d, adding that he supported a \u201cswift resolution\u201d to the issue. <\/p>\n<p>Dutch economy minister Vincent Karremans also spoke to Wang about Nexperia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe discussed further steps towards reaching a solution that serves the interests of Nexperia, the European economy, and the Chinese economy.
