{"id":36738,"date":"2025-10-13T11:40:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T11:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=36738"},"modified":"2025-10-13T11:40:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T11:40:11","slug":"despite-government-shutdown-oct-15-is-the-tax-extension-deadline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=36738","title":{"rendered":"Despite government shutdown, Oct. 15 is the tax extension deadline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108068248\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Valentinrussanov | E+ | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/09\/government-shutdown-senate-vote-bills.html\">government shutdown<\/a>, the Oct. 15 federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/09\/24\/tax-extension-deadline-cant-pay-taxes.html\">tax extension deadline<\/a> is fast approaching for many filers.<\/p>\n<p>The process could be harder for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/taxes\/\">some taxpayers<\/a> after the IRS furloughed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/08\/irs-furloughs-workers-government-shutdown.html\">nearly half of its workforce<\/a> \u2014about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs-employee-emergency-news\" target=\"_blank\">34,000 employees<\/a> \u2014 earlier this week, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a long haul if you need any kind of specialized customer experience,\u201d said Jennifer MacMillan, president of the National Association of Enrolled Agents, whose members are tax professionals licensed by the IRS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 id=\"read-more-cnbc-personal-finance-coverage\" class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/11\/options-cant-pay-your-taxes-by-deadline.html\">original tax deadline<\/a> was April 15. If you couldn\u2019t meet that due date, you could submit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-4868\" target=\"_blank\">Form 4868<\/a> for a six-month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/03\/file-tax-extension-for-free-.html\">extension to file<\/a>. But your tax payment was still due on April 15.<\/p>\n<p>During fiscal 2024, the IRS received more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/p6292.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">20 million tax extension forms<\/a>, according to the latest agency projections. For 2025, it expects that number to be around 19.8 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some taxpayers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/tax-relief-in-disaster-situations\" target=\"_blank\">impacted by natural disasters<\/a> automatically have even more time to file beyond Oct. 15.<\/p>\n<p>If you missed the April 15 tax deadline, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/failure-to-pay-penalty\" target=\"_blank\">late payment penalty<\/a>\u00a0is 0.5% of your unpaid balance per month or partial month, capped at 25%. You will also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/quarterly-interest-rates#2023\" target=\"_blank\">incur interest<\/a>\u00a0on unpaid taxes.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/failure-to-file-penalty\" target=\"_blank\">failure-to-file penalty<\/a>\u00a0is 5% of unpaid taxes per month or partial month, up to 25%. If you filed for an extension, this kicks in after Oct. 15.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"expect-increased-wait-times\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>\u2018Expect increased wait times\u2019<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Filers can \u201cexpect increased wait times, backlogs and delays implementing tax law changes as the shutdown continues,\u201d the National Treasury Employees Union <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nteu.org\/blog\/2025\/10\/08\/IRSShutdownStatement\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaxpayers around the country will now have a much harder time getting the assistance they need, just as they get ready to file their extension returns due next week,\u201d the organization said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>However, some customer service representatives remain at work, according to a 2026 lapsed appropriations <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/system\/files\/266\/Treasury_IRS_Lapse_Plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">contingency plan<\/a> that went into effect Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring a government shutdown, there could be impacts to IRS services,\u201d said Elizabeth Young, director for tax practice and ethics with the American Institute of CPAs. \u201cHowever, electronic filing systems typically remain operational, so you can still file online.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"double-check-your-filing\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Double-check your filing<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>While it may be tempting to rush through your tax return to meet the Oct. 15 deadline, errors could cause IRS processing delays, according to Young.<\/p>\n<p>The IRS has \u201cvery sophisticated software\u201d that compares information returns, such as W-2s and 1099s, to what\u2019s reported on your filing, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/29\/tax-return-audit-key-tax-forms.html\">previously told CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/29\/tax-return-audit-key-tax-forms.html\">tax forms<\/a> arrived in January, February or March. But others may have taken longer, depending on your situation.
