It\u2019s just not what the people want,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>Vought, a powerful figure in the administration, is a conservative ideologue who contributed to the rightwing \u201cProject 2025\u201d manifesto for Republican control of the White House, which Trump distanced himself from during last year\u2019s election campaign but is now embracing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the first months of his second term, Trump has shuttered the US Agency for International Development and sought to gut other agencies he associates with left-wing priorities, such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where Vought was chosen to be acting director.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the shutdown began early on Wednesday, Vought has announced that $18bn of infrastructure projects in New York City were being \u201cput on hold\u201d \u2014 including the Hudson Tunnel refurbishment and work on the Second Avenue Subway \u2014 to review whether federal funding was based on \u201cunconstitutional DEI principles\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Vought also said that $8bn of clean energy funding he described as the \u201cGreen new scam funding to fuel the left\u2019s climate agenda\u201d was being scrapped in states that have recently voted for Democrats in presidential elections and statewide congressional races.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Many Republicans have defended the cuts. \u201cOMB director Russ Vought has been dreaming about and meticulously preparing for the \u2018Schumer shutdown\u2019 since puberty,\u201d Mike Lee, the Utah Republican senator, quipped on X. \u201cThis is going to be the Democrats\u2019 worst nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday morning, US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent defended the White House\u2019s threats of permanent spending cuts and mass firings of federal workers. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s unreasonable for the president to use all the levers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged the shutdown could dent economic output, saying: \u201cWe could see a hit to the GDP, a hit to growth, and a hit to working Americans.\u201d But he also blamed Democrats, comparing them with \u201cterrorists\u201d and warning that the government was being held \u201chostage\u201d by the party\u2019s need to satisfy progressives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want to say, like, this is what we have to have.
