{"id":36299,"date":"2025-10-01T19:37:02","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T19:37:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=36299"},"modified":"2025-10-01T19:37:02","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T19:37:02","slug":"what-it-means-for-social-security-checks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=36299","title":{"rendered":"What it means for Social Security checks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107314504\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Richard Stephen | Istock | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"social-security-services-during-the-shutdown\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Social Security services during the shutdown<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Local offices will remain open, but services will be reduced, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ssa.gov\/what-the-federal-government-shutdown-means-to-you\" target=\"_blank\">the Social Security Administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the agency, consumers can still:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>apply for benefits<\/li>\n<li>request an appeal<\/li>\n<li>change address or direct deposit information<\/li>\n<li>report a death<\/li>\n<li>verify or change citizenship status<\/li>\n<li>replace a lost or missing Social Security payment<\/li>\n<li>obtain an expedited payment in an emergency<\/li>\n<li>change a representative payee,<\/li>\n<li>obtain a new or replacement Social Security card<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SSI beneficiaries will still be able to make changes to their living arrangements or income.<\/p>\n<p>Offices will be open for hearings before administrative law judges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108205934\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108205934\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000390597\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>However, certain in-person services will not be available, according to SSA, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>proof of income letters<\/li>\n<li>updates or corrections to earnings records<\/li>\n<li>overpayment processing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It also will not be possible to replace Medicare cards, the agency said.<\/p>\n<p>To access benefit information and services, SSA is urging individuals to log on to their online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/myaccount\" target=\"_blank\">My Social Security<\/a> accounts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"social-security-cola-may-be-delayed\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Social Security COLA may be delayed<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>A government shutdown could delay the release of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/29\/government-shutdowns-usually-have-little-economic-impact-this-time-could-be-different.html\">key economic data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>New consumer price index data is scheduled to be released on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/schedule\/news_release\/cpi.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Oct. 15<\/a>. The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the 2026 cost-of-living adjustment this month based on that data.<\/p>\n<p>If the CPI data release is delayed, that may have an impact on when the Social Security COLA is announced, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/sites\/dolgov\/files\/general\/plans\/dol-contingency-plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Labor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than 74 million beneficiaries may see an increase in their monthly payments next year, based on the annual inflation adjustment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/11\/social-security-cola-cost-of-living-adjustment-may-be-higher-in-2026-estimates.html\">Estimates<\/a> released in September pointed to a 2.7% to 2.8% benefit boost for 2026, which would push the average retirement benefit up by about $54 per month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"the-question-is-is-it-going-to-be-a-long-shutdown\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>\u2018The question is, is it going to be a long shutdown?\u2019<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Not counting the current one, the federal government has had 14 shutdowns since 1980, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bipartisanpolicy.org\/explainer\/what-happens-if-the-government-shuts-down\" target=\"_blank\">Bipartisan Policy Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This lapse \u201cfeels different\u201d due to the strong political opposition between the parties, said Maria Freese, senior legislative representative at the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said the federal funding lapse may lead to \u201cirreversible\u201d cuts to health care and social benefit programs. Trump did not elaborate on exactly which programs could be affected.
