{"id":35642,"date":"2025-09-12T11:46:44","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T11:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=35642"},"modified":"2025-09-12T11:46:44","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T11:46:44","slug":"trump-tariffs-inflation-push-early-holiday-shopping-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=35642","title":{"rendered":"Trump tariffs, inflation push early holiday shopping season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108197587\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Holiday decorations on display at a Costco in Princeton, N.J.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Dickler | CNBC<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>It\u2019s barely the start of fall and yet, by some measures, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/holiday-central\/\">holiday season<\/a> is in full swing.<\/p>\n<p>Seasonal d\u00e9cor items \u2014 including pre-lit Christmas trees, wreaths, wrapping paper and a popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.costco.com\/kirkland-signature-nativity-set-14-piece.product.4000353599.html\" target=\"_blank\">nativity set<\/a> \u2014 are already on display at my local <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/COST\/\">Costco<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, near Princeton, N.J., with some items even starting to sell out, according to sales associates.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers began shopping for the holiday season as early as July this year, hoping to make the most of sales events such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/prime-day-sales.html\">Amazon Prime Day<\/a>, said Brian McCarthy, a principal at Deloitte Consulting.<\/p>\n<p>Nervousness about higher prices was a motivating factor, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/11\/inflation-breakdown-for-august-2025.html\">Here\u2019s the inflation breakdown for August 2025 <\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/10\/aca-enhanced-subsidies-expire-obamacare-premiums-rise.html\">ACA cliff may mean \u2018huge premium shock\u2019 in 2026<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/10\/no-tax-on-tips-deduction-who-qualifies.html\">Treasury released early list for \u2018no tax on tips\u2019 deduction<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Between lingering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000793\">inflation<\/a> and President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/11\/trump-asking-eu-to-slap-100percent-tariffs-on-india-and-china-raises-eyebrows.html\">tariff agenda<\/a>, \u201cconsumers are more concerned about their economic outlook,\u201d McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Deloitte\u2019s recent holiday retail survey, retail sales will rise again this year, but at a slower pace compared to 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Holiday shoppers are expected to spend $1.61 trillion to $1.62 trillion between November and January, up about 3% from last year,\u00a0according to Deloitte\u2019s report. The year before, holiday sales grew by 4.2%.<\/p>\n<p>However, this year\u2019s holiday sales will get an extra boost from e-commerce, which is projected to grow between 7% and 9% year-over-year during the 2025-26 holiday season, Deloitte\u2019s survey\u00a0also found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect this holiday season to demonstrate the resiliency of consumers as they continue to face economic uncertainty,\u201d Natalie Martini, Deloitte\u2019s vice chair and U.S. retail and consumer products leader, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"fears-of-higher-prices-over-the-holidays\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Fears of higher prices over the holidays<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Yet, heading into the holiday shopping season, 41% of consumers are concerned that gifts will be more expensive this year and 30% said they expect to spend less this holiday than they did last year, according to a separate report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankrate.com\/credit-cards\/news\/holiday-spending-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bankrate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On average, consumers plan to spend about $1,552 on holiday gifts, travel and entertainment \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/03\/holiday-shopping-gen-z-retailers.html\">5% drop<\/a> from the planned holiday spending average in the year-ago period, according to another survey by consulting firm PwC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Nearly half of shoppers, or 49%, have already begun or plan to begin shopping before Oct. 31, according to Bankrate\u2019s survey, which polled more than 2,500 adults in July.<\/p>\n<p>But for those who aren\u2019t in the holiday spirit just yet, prices near the peak season may not be as high as previously thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRetailers will have to offer discounts to get deal-conscious consumers to spend, and we should see the best deals roll out starting in early October and continue through Christmas,\u201d said Ted Rossman, Bankrate\u2019s senior industry analyst.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"the-impact-of-tariffs-on-holiday-gifts\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>The impact of tariffs on holiday gifts<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>\u201cThe impact of tariffs for the upcoming holiday season is already baked in because for the most part, retailers have already acquired the items they are going to be putting on the shelves for the holiday season or they are already in transit,\u201d said Marbue\u00a0Brown, a consumer\u00a0trends analyst and author of \u201cBlueprint for Customer Obsession.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108168587\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108168587\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000381536\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>According to Deloitte\u2019s McCarthy, many retail buyers placed their holiday orders earlier than usual this year, which can make it harder to manage inventory but helps guard against price shocks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/21\/us-eu-trade-agreement-details.html\">Tariff delays<\/a> also \u201callowed a lot of retailers to get holiday merchandise in early at pre-tariff pricing,\u201d Rossman said.
