The central bank last cut rates in June, bringing rates further down from last year&#8217;s record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/stats\/policy_and_exchange_rates\/key_ecb_interest_rates\/html\/index.en.html\" target=\"_blank\">high<\/a> of 4%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Inflation is currently at around the 2% medium-term target and the Governing Council&#8217;s assessment of the inflation outlook is broadly unchanged,&#8221; the ECB said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank added that it would follow a meeting-by-meeting, data-dependent approach and was not pre-committing to a specific path for interest rates.<\/p>\n<p>The ECB is grappling with global economic uncertainty, despite inflation in the euro zone <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/databrowser\/view\/PRC_HICP_MANR__custom_3761882\/bookmark\/table?lang=en&amp;bookmarkId=4ad27e6f-358a-4a3d-82a0-587d69a833eb&amp;c=1667558907980\" target=\"_blank\">hovering<\/a> around the central bank&#8217;s 2% target in recent months, and the EU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/21\/us-eu-trade-agreement-details.html\">striking a trade agreement<\/a> with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The transatlantic partners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/27\/trump-european-union-eu-trade-tariffs.html\">agreed<\/a> to 15% blanket tariffs on EU exports to the U.S.\u00a0in July, with further details about the framework emerging last month. It addressed some questions for key European sectors like pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/22\/the-us-eu-deal-is-here-europes-businesses-remain-on-edge.html\">questions remain<\/a> as some issues \u2014 such as provisions for the wine and spirits sector \u2014 were left open. Concerns over further tariffs have also grown following Trump&#8217;s threat of retaliations against the EU after it hit <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GOOGL\/\">Alphabet<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>&#8216;s Google with a $3.45 billion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/05\/google-slapped-by-eu-with-3point45-billion-antitrust-fine.html\">antitrust fine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fears about the impact tariffs could have on economic growth remain. Growth in the euro zone has remained sluggish even as rates have come down, with the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/databrowser\/view\/NAMQ_10_GDP__custom_7680558\/bookmark\/table?lang=en&amp;bookmarkId=a4ce6a9d-7ef1-48f1-a5bf-e23a717fcf75&amp;c=1696497560747\" target=\"_blank\">figures<\/a> showing just 0.1% growth in the second quarter after a 0.6% expansion in the previous period.<\/p>\n<p>While the interest rate decision itself was widely anticipated, Deutsche Bank economists last week noted that &#8220;the focus will be on the signals for the path that lies ahead for monetary policy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Markets on Thursday are therefore expected to focus on ECB President Christine Lagarde&#8217;s press conference and the latest projections for inflation and economic growth.
