{"id":35559,"date":"2025-09-08T11:10:27","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T11:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=35559"},"modified":"2025-09-08T11:10:27","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T11:10:27","slug":"ais-workforce-impact-is-small-but-its-not-zero-economist-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=35559","title":{"rendered":"AI&#8217;s workforce impact is \u2018small,&#8217; but it\u2019s not \u2018zero,\u2019 economist says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108194398\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>BartekSzewczyk | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a> has caused turbulence in the labor market, the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/13\/white-collar-jobs-are-down-but-dont-blame-ai-yet-economists-say.html\">decline in job opportunities<\/a> has more to do with economic uncertainty, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we look across the broader labor market, we see that AI\u2019s impact on the labor market has still been fairly small,\u201d said Cory Stahle, a senior economist at Indeed, a job search site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe important asterisk is that that doesn\u2019t mean that it has been zero,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mandi Woodruff-Santos, a career coach, agrees: \u201cI don\u2019t think AI is to blame, I think the economic uncertainty is to blame.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"the-state-of-the-job-market\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>The state of the job market<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The job market <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/04\/adp-jpb-data-august-2025.html\">has not been good<\/a> in recent months, whether you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/05\/job-seekers-face-worst-game-of-musical-chairs.html\">looking for a job<\/a> or currently employed.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. economy added about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/05\/jobs-report-august-2025.html\">22,000 jobs<\/a> for the month of August, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.3%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/empsit.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\">according <\/a>to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report on Friday. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for payrolls to rise by 75,000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Of those who are still employed, some are \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/18\/job-hugging-job-hopping.html\">job hugging<\/a>,\u201d or \u201cholding onto their job for dear life,\u201d according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kornferry.com\/insights\/this-week-in-leadership\/job-hugging-for-dear-life?utm_source=marketo&amp;utm_medium=em&amp;utm_campaign=25-08-gbl-brand-twil&amp;mkt_tok=MjUxLU9MUi05NTgAAAGcR8nB5NktuihwVkAzB_XdcAZSv2RxS4q0VGrou11Qwu0uelUrzhGIfpoa2avvN-SWPJsBtcRQdchG5PH4SFNnM1agf-n6p-MaFkOf0fRibPg4\" target=\"_blank\">August report<\/a> by Korn Ferry, an organizational consulting firm.<\/p>\n<p>But others are \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/25\/quiet-quitting-is-a-past-trend-why-workers-are-quiet-cracking.html\">quiet cracking<\/a>,\u201d which is a \u201cpersistent feeling of workplace unhappiness that leads to disengagement, poor performance, and an increased desire to quit,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/research\/quiet-cracking-workplace-survey\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a> cloud learning platform TalentLMS.<\/p>\n<p>Growing economic uncertainty has kept workers from quitting their jobs and has led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/11\/unemployed-americans-job-market-charts.html\">businesses to slow down hiring decisions<\/a>, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo business knows what the heck the Trump administration is going to do next with the economy,\u201d said Woodruff-Santos. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in this kind of economic climate, companies are not sure of anything, and so they\u2019re being very conservative with the way that they\u2019re hiring,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"how-artificial-intelligence-is-impacting-the-labor-force\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>How artificial intelligence is impacting the labor force<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>While some companies have announced layoffs to pursue AI technologies in their organizations, most of the impact has been isolated in the tech industry, said Indeed\u2019s Stahle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/02\/salesforce-ceo-confirms-4000-layoffs-because-i-need-less-heads-with-ai.html\">said <\/a>the company laid off about 4,000 customer support roles, due to advancements in the company\u2019s use of artificial intelligence software.<\/p>\n<p>Other studies show that AI has mostly affected younger workers rather than mid-career employees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An August <a href=\"https:\/\/digitaleconomy.stanford.edu\/publications\/canaries-in-the-coal-mine\/\" target=\"_blank\">report <\/a>by Stanford University professors found that early-career workers (ages 22 to 25) in the most AI-exposed occupations experienced a 13% decline in employment. On the flip side, employment for workers in less-exposed fields and more experienced workers in the same occupations has either stayed the same or grown.<\/p>\n<p>The study also found that employment declines are concentrated in occupations \u201cwhere AI is more likely to automate rather than augment human labor.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/><a industry itself is not a large sector, said Stahle. <a href=\"https:\/\/lecbyo.files.cmp.optimizely.com\/download\/808ea63053b111f08b6ca695fc160b1a\" target=\"_blank\">According <\/a>to a March 2025 analysis by non-profit trade association CompTIA, or the Computing Technology Industry Association, \u201cnet tech employment\u201d made up about 5.8% of the overall workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Net-tech employment is a designation that represents all those employed in the industry, including workers in technical positions such as cybersecurity and business professionals employed by technology companies, as well as full-time and self-employed technology workers.<\/p>\n<p>For AI-driven layoffs to be considered a broad threat to the job market, the technology needs to start impacting other sectors, such as retail and marketing, said Stahle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"were-seeing-more-and-more-demand-for-ai-skills\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>\u2018We\u2019re seeing more and more demand for AI skills\u2019<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Some predictions on AI\u2019s workforce impact argue that employers may be more likely to retrain workers rather than lay them off, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/to-prepare-young-people-for-the-ai-workplace-focus-on-the-fundamentals\/\" target=\"_blank\">according <\/a>to a new report by the Brookings Institute, a public policy think tank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI may be more likely to augment rather than fully replace human workers,\u201d the authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, \u201cwe\u2019re seeing more and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/04\/employers-are-paying-a-premium-for-ai-skills-most-non-tech-jobs.html\">more demand for AI skills<\/a>,\u201d said class=\"group\">\n<p>If you have the opportunity, experts say, it\u2019s smart to learn how your field and employer are using AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019d be foolish not to do the research into your own field,\u201d and understand how AI can be a tool in your industry, said Woodruff-Santos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Look for training programs or webinars where you can participate or free trials of AI
