A 2024 survey by U.K. consumer group Which? found chocolate products were the category with the highest average annual inflation rate in grocery stores last year, at 11%. In the U.S., the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/13\/soaring-cocoa-prices-are-bad-news-for-those-valentines-day-chocolate-purchases.html\">price of popular products such as<\/a> Hershey\u2019s Kisses similarly jumped around 12% year-on-year.<\/p>\n<p>Adalbert Lechner, head of Swiss giant <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/LISP-CH\/\">Lindt & Spr\u00fcngli<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/22\/consumers-are-insecure-no-recovery-in-sight-for-struggling-cocoa-market-lindt-ceo-says.html\">told CNBC in April<\/a> he doesn\u2019t think cocoa prices \u201cwill ever come down to the levels where they have been before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cocoa futures have remained choppy but overall eased this year, falling from $8,177 per metric ton at the start of January to around $7,855 in August. That compares with $2,374 three years ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-DataWrapperChart\" class=\"DataWrapperChart-dataWrapperContainer\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/24775416\/embed\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" class=\"flourish-embed-iframe\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"width:100%;height:600px;\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-forms allow-scripts allow-downloads allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div style=\"width:100%!;margin-top:4px!important;text-align:right!important;\"><a class=\"flourish-credit\" href=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/24775416\/?utm_source=embed&utm_campaign=visualisation\/24775416\" target=\"_top\" style=\"text-decoration:none!important\"> <\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>And the recent decline won\u2019t show up in chocolate prices in the near-term, according to Tracey Allen, agricultural commodities strategist at J.P. Morgan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got a bit of a hangover happening here,\u201d Allen told CNBC\u2019s \u201cSquawk Box Europe\u201d on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Chocolatiers are still dealing with the heightened cocoa prices from the fourth quarter of 2024 when they saw record highs, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese heightened prices have really had this flow-on, lagged impact for the industry as a whole,\u201d she said, with a higher cost of doing business being passed through to the consumer. \u201cThere is this ongoing deficit in the market, big depletion of availability of cocoa beans and availability of products. So higher prices for longer here, I\u2019m afraid,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>However, the outlook may be slightly brighter in time for the busy Easter season, she noted.<\/p>\n<p>Industrial demand from manufacturers is softening just as supply is improving, with production ramping up, better weather conditions and new plantings in Ecuador and Brazil reaching maturity, according to J.P. Morgan analysis, though cocoa prices are seen remaining structurally higher for longer at $6,000 per metric ton.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108189088\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108189088\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000386389\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108189089-17557851861755785184-41283419711-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1755785186&w=750&h=422&vtcrop=y\" alt=\"JP Morgan: Deficiency in cocoa supply means prices will stay higher for longer\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"tariff-hit\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Tariff hit<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Hamad Hussain, climate and commodities economist at Capital Economics, told CNBC that longstanding productivity challenges such as diseases and years of underinvestment in Ivory Coast and Ghana \u2013 the world\u2019s two largest cocoa producers \u2013 mean that global supply will remain tight, even if weather conditions in West Africa improve over the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat will keep prices elevated at historically high levels.
