Fewer 25- to 34-year-olds are getting married or having children, or even working full time or moving out of their parents\u2019 home, according to a recent U.S. Census Bureau\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/working-papers\/2025\/demo\/sehsd-wp2025-03.html\" target=\"_blank\">working paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/12\/heres-the-inflation-breakdown-for-july-2025-in-one-chart.html\">Here\u2019s the inflation breakdown for July 2025<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/12\/cola-2026-social-security-cost-of-living-adjustment-estimate.html\">Social Security COLA may be 2.7% in 2026: estimates<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/13\/older-student-loan-delinquencies-under-trump.html\">Older student loan borrowers face high delinquency rates<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Compared to previous generations, the share of young adults reaching those four key benchmarks notched a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2025\/08\/milestones-to-adulthood.html\" target=\"_blank\">significant drop<\/a>,\u201d the Census statisticians\u00a0found.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 50 years ago, almost half of 25- to 34-year-olds achieved those milestones, which \u201cmark the transition from adolescence to adulthood,\u201d according to the analysis of the Census Bureau\u2019s American Community Survey data \u2014 today, less than a quarter have done the same.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107356723\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Jhorrocks | E+ | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Soehono, who also has student debt from college, said she is not in a financial position to buy a home or start a family. \u201cWhere I am at with my life is focusing on my career because that\u2019s really all I have right now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to hefty student loan bills, the recent runup in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000793\">inflation<\/a>\u00a0helped cause rent and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/01\/11\/high-housing-costs-have-kept-31percent-of-gen-z-adults-living-at-home.html\">housing prices<\/a>\u00a0to jump, worsening an affordability crunch for many just starting out.<\/p>\n<p>The median age of first-time homeowners is now 38 years old, an all-time high,\u00a0according\u00a0to a 2024 report by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.realtor\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-11\/2024-profile-of-home-buyers-and-sellers-highlights-11-04-2024_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> National Association of Realtors<\/a>.
